DEA 260 - Dental Science II

This course is the study of pharmacology, medical emergencies in the dental healthcare setting, and nutrition.
Prerequisite: DEA 507  , DEA 314  , DEA 256  , DEA 413  , DEA 249  
Corequisite: DEA 615  , DEA 323  ,DEA 265  , DEA 417  , DEA 707  
Competencies
 

  1.  Assess the critical detail of the medical/dental history
    1.  Review the patient’s health history before each examination
    2. Discuss any medical/dental contraindications for treatment
  2. Examine common medical emergencies and dental office management of those emergencies
    1. Determine risk factors for possible emergencies
    2. Identify supplies that may be found in an office medical emergency kit
    3. Relate the sequence of emergency procedures and each member of the team carrying out each action
  3. Categorize drugs
    1. Differentiate between generic and brand names of drugs
    2. Create a portfolio of common drugs used in the dental office
    3. Identify the parts of a prescription
  4. Correlate the ethical and legal responsibilities of dental staff in a medical emergency
    1. Examine the rights of the patient
    2. Define how patient information is privileged and private
    3. Discuss HIPPA and how it affects members of the staff in a dental office
  5. Demonstrate criteria for successful nutrition counseling
    1. Explain how to read a food label
    2. Identify health risks related to diet
    3. Complete a nutrition analysis of a case study family and their diet needs
    4. Compile a fourteen-day diet history log that includes: Calories, and nutrients consumed
    5. Present diet discoveries, changes made or plans to change based on the fourteen-day log
