DEA 260 - Dental Science II Credits: 1 Lecture Hours: 1 Lab Hours: 0 Practicum Hours: 0 Work Experience: 0 Course Type: Voc/Tech This course is the study of pharmacology, medical emergencies in the dental healthcare setting, and nutrition. Prerequisite: DEA 507 , DEA 314 , DEA 256 , DEA 413 , DEA 249 Corequisite: DEA 615 , DEA 323 ,DEA 265 , DEA 417 , DEA 707 Competencies
- Assess the critical detail of the medical/dental history
- Review the patient’s health history before each examination
- Discuss any medical/dental contraindications for treatment
- Examine common medical emergencies and dental office management of those emergencies
- Determine risk factors for possible emergencies
- Identify supplies that may be found in an office medical emergency kit
- Relate the sequence of emergency procedures and each member of the team carrying out each action
- Categorize drugs
- Differentiate between generic and brand names of drugs
- Create a portfolio of common drugs used in the dental office
- Identify the parts of a prescription
- Correlate the ethical and legal responsibilities of dental staff in a medical emergency
- Examine the rights of the patient
- Define how patient information is privileged and private
- Discuss HIPPA and how it affects members of the staff in a dental office
- Demonstrate criteria for successful nutrition counseling
- Explain how to read a food label
- Identify health risks related to diet
- Complete a nutrition analysis of a case study family and their diet needs
- Compile a fourteen-day diet history log that includes: Calories, and nutrients consumed
- Present diet discoveries, changes made or plans to change based on the fourteen-day log
