Credit Course Registration Procedures

New, Full-Time and Part-Time Students

A full-time student is defined as a student enrolled in 19 or fewer credits for Fall and Spring semesters, 12 or fewer credits for Summer semester. A part-time student is defined as a students enrolled in 11 or fewer credits for Fall and Spring semesters, 7 or fewer credits for Summer semester.

All students are required to participate in DMACC Student Orientation.

Students are notified via their DMACC email and personal email address when DMACC Student Orientation is available for each term. Please note: completion of orientation is required before new students may enroll in classes. Classes fill up quickly and you are advised to complete your orientation experience as soon as possible.

Who needs to attend DMACC Student Orientation?

  • Completion of DMACC Student Orientation is mandatory for all new, degree-seeking students.
  • If you are a current student, but admitted into a new program, you may need to attend DMACC Student Orientation based on your new program. Please feel free to contact us at 515-965-7321 or orientation@dmacc.edu if you have questions about the orientation requirement for your program.

SDV 108: The College Experience

DMACC requires all new students seeking an AA-Liberal Arts, AGS or AS-Liberal Arts degree and some AAS degrees to take SDV108, The College Experience, during their first semester. Students taking all classes online should take the online SDV 108. The goal of the course is to connect students with DMACC faculty/staff, resources and students in their designated program of study, all while teaching healthy lifestyles, leadership, ethics, basic study skills, diversity and college procedures. Blackboard skills and other DMACC technology skills are also taught. SDV 108, The College Experience gives students the knowledge and support they need to succeed at DMACC and beyond.

Students who do not need to take SDV 108

  • Transfer students with 24 credits, a GPA of 2.0 and above, and an official transcript from the previous institution
  • Students who meet the definition of Guest Student (ES 4100)
  • Students accepted and enrolled in a career education program. A list of career education programs is provided on the Registration Dates page. A hard copy can be obtained from the Director of Student Development or the Director of Program Development/Academic Support Services and in the Student Development Office on each DMACC campus
  • Students enrolled in the DMACC dual credit programs who have applied for graduation and successfully completed at least 64 credits (an AA or AS degree) prior to graduating from high school

Math Placement

Students, interested in taking a MATH course at DMACC, are required to complete the ALEKS math assessment and receive the appropriate score for placement. If the student has met the prerequisite for the math course they wish to take, they are exempt from taking ALEKS. Visit the ALEKS webpage for more information.

Course Prerequisites

Many courses require students to have met the prerequisite course prior to registration. If you successfully completed the course prerequisite at a different institution (within appropriate time), you may send your unofficial transcript to registration@dmacc.edu. Students are required to include the following: DMACC ID; the course they want to register; their unofficial transcript (including full name, semester the course was completed and the final grade).

Continuing Students

Continuing/Returning students may register for credit courses according to the dates and times published on the DMACC website. Students may register online via the DMACC Web Information System, by telephone or in person.

Student Holds/Course Registrations

Students with past-due financial obligations to the College or that fall below satisfactory academic progress will not be permitted to register for classes until the past-due balance or academic standing is resolved.

Some courses/sections are restricted to students accepted into a particular program of study. Students are required to submit an official program change through Admissions if they wish to change their program of study. Any exception must be reviewed and approved by the Program Chair.

Math Placement

Students, interested in taking a MATH course at DMACC, are required to complete the ALEKS math assessment and receive the appropriate score for placement. If the student has met the prerequisite for the math course they wish to take, they are exempt from taking ALEKS. Visit the ALEKS webpage for more information.

Adding a Course

Continuing students may add a credit course through the first five days of the full-length semester. Students who add courses during this time period are advised that classes have already begun and missed classes are the same as any absence. Course adds can be made online via the Web Information System, by phone or in person. Students are not permitted to attend a course unless they are officially registered for the course. 

Course Wait List

Students, who wish to register for a course that is currently filled to capacity, may place themselves on the Wait List for that course. If a seat becomes available, the first student on the Wait List will be sent a notification to their DMACC EMAIL. The student will be given 24 hours (from the time the notification was sent) to register for the course. If the student misses the deadline, the seat is forfeited and the next student will be sent a notification. Students can be placed on a course Wait List up to 2 days before the class begins. Students will remain on the Wait List through the last day to add for each part of term. After the add deadline, the Wait List will be cleared. Any exception to course capacity is reviewed by the Executive Academic Dean or their designee. Visit the DMACC website for more detailed information regarding Course Wait Lists.

Attendance and Enrollment

Students may be administratively dropped from courses due to non-attendance. Information on this procedure is contained in the Academic Information section of this catalog under “Attendance and Enrollment.”

Dropping a Course

Students may drop/withdraw from a full semester credit course through the 50th class day of the Fall and Spring semesters and the 30th day of the Summer term. For courses that are less than the full semester, drop dates are prorated according to the length of each shorter term. Refund deadlines are earlier than withdrawal deadlines. Students who have dropped or withdrawn from a course will not be permitted to continue attending the course.

Dropping/Adding After Deadlines

Students who miss the deadline for drop/withdrawal, drop with refund, or adding a course may file an appeal asking that the deadline in question be waived. To submit an appeal, the student is required to complete a Petition for Policy Waiver. Students must have extenuating circumstances that precluded compliance with deadlines. Documentation must be submitted in support of the Petition. The completed Petition form, along with supporting documentation, must be emailed to ppw@dmacc.edu. The deadline for submitting a Petition is no later than the last day of the semester immediately following the semester in which the Petition is requested. The Petition for Policy Waiver Committee reviews petitions and notifies students of the final disposition of each petition in writing.

Payment of Tuition and Enrollment

Students will be sent an E-Bill (electronic billing notice) and are required to pay full tuition and fees by the tuition due date, prior to the start of each semester. Students, who did not pay in full or have not finalized payment arrangements, may be administratively dropped from all courses for the semester.

Student Account HOLDS

Students who have a HOLD on their records due to unpaid financial obligations will be permitted to withdraw from credit courses, but will not be permitted to obtain transcripts, and graduation awards will not be conferred. In addition, students who have indebtedness may be prohibited from enrolling in courses as long as the indebtedness remains. Unpaid debts may be referred to a collection agency and/or a credit bureau. Students should contact the Student Accounts Office to resolve their debt.

Noncredit Course Registration Adds and Drops

Registration during the time and dates published in the Continuing Education schedule of classes can be accomplished online via the DMACC Continuing Education website, by telephone or in person. Payment is due at the time of registration.

Students who wish to register or add a course may do so, as long as the course is available on the Continuing Education Course Schedule online. To drop or change enrollment in a non-credit course, students must request drop or exchange 48 hours (two business days) before the course begins by calling 515-964-6800 or 800-362-2127.
