AGV 166 - Veterinary Nursing Care Credits: 3 Lecture Hours: 1 Lab Hours: 4 Practicum Hours: 0 Work Experience: 0 Course Type: Voc/Tech Introduces the fundamentals of animal nursing, including: restraint, venipuncture techniques, medication or fluid administration. Emphasis will be placed on assistant level nursing care for the hospitalized patient. Prerequisite: AGV 120 , AGV 128 , AGV 129 , AGV 231 , AGV 164 Competencies
- Execute restraint for common diagnostic procedures
- Lift patients onto the exam table using proper technique
- Demonstrate common restraint procedures for dogs and cats
- List common venipuncture sites of common species
- Administer medications to canine and feline patients
- Perform SQ injections
- Demonstrate IM injections
- Apply a topical medication
- Give an oral solid medication
- Summarize nursing care of wounds
- Explain development of a wound
- Describe proper monitoring for bandaging and splints
- Discuss with owner home care of bandages
- Outline proper handling of recumbent patients
