AGV 166 - Veterinary Nursing Care

Introduces the fundamentals of animal nursing, including: restraint, venipuncture techniques, medication or fluid administration. Emphasis will be placed on assistant level nursing care for the hospitalized patient.
Prerequisite: AGV 120  , AGV 128  , AGV 129  , AGV 231  , AGV 164  
Competencies
  1. Execute restraint for common diagnostic procedures
    1. Lift patients onto the exam table using proper technique
    2. Demonstrate common restraint procedures for dogs and cats
    3. List common venipuncture sites of common species
  2. Administer medications to canine and feline patients
    1. Perform SQ injections
    2. Demonstrate IM injections
    3. Apply a topical medication
    4. Give an oral solid medication
  3. Summarize nursing care of wounds
    1. Explain development of a wound
    2. Describe proper monitoring for bandaging and splints
    3. Discuss with owner home care of bandages
  4. Outline proper handling of recumbent patients
    1. Discuss prevention of decubitus ulcers
    2. Define care of recumbent patients at home
    3. Explain key client education points for care of recumbent patients
  5. Prepare food for hospitalized patients
    1. Store food according to protocol
    2. Follow written orders for food delivery
    3. Record intake/output on medical records
  6. Evaluate the human animal bond
    1. Discuss euthanasia techniques
    2. Review available grief counseling options
    3. Define proper post mortem patient care
