This course introduces the basics of veterinary medicine and hospital operations. Students are instructed in hospital work flow, medical record keeping, front office activities, hospital sanitation and cleanliness and inventory management as it relates to restocking supplies within the hospital. This course will introduce students to basic behavior, breeds and animal care.
Prerequisite: Acceptance into the DMACC Veterinary Assisting Program or DMACC Veterinary Technology Program.

  1. Implement veterinary hospital work flow and front office tasks
    1. Identify components of a valid client-patient-relationship
    2. Discuss legal implications of medical records
    3. Recognize the components of legal medical records and logs
    4. Describe advantages and disadvantages to different methods of formatting medical records
    5. Demonstrate generation of medical records
    6. Execute appropriate phone etiquette during laboratory activities
  2. Appraise responsibilities and techniques for keeping kennels and cages clean and disinfected, and maintaining proper records on care
    1. Recognize legal responsibilities for maintaining animal care facilities and records
    2. Demonstrate proper procedures for sanitizing pet care facilities
    3. Discuss protocols for managing room inventory
    4. List common disinfecting agents used in kennel and hospital sanitation
  3. Examine feline- and canine-specific behavior
    1. Recognize the differences in dog and cat breeds
    2. Identify the behaviors associated with each domestic species (dog and cat).
    3. Recognize the specific needs of dogs and cats for appropriate care
    4. Describe common identification methods for dogs and cats
  4. Compare and contrast the roles of veterinarians, credentialed veterinary technicians, certified veterinary assistants, kennel attendants and other personnel in a professional working environment
    1. Discuss the history of veterinary technology
    2. Summarize the laws and ethics governing the veterinary profession
    3. Identify the professional organizations relating to veterinary technology
    4. List the requirements to becoming a credentialed veterinary technician
