AGV 231 - Intro. to Clinical Pathology

This course is an introduction to clinical pathologic laboratory methods and various sample collection, procedures, and interpretation for common diagnostic testing performed in the veterinary laboratory.
Prerequisite: Acceptance into the DMACC Veterinary Assistant or Technician Program.
Competencies
  1. Outline collection and processing of animal samples in a veterinary laboratory
    1. Establish appropriate procedure for collecting samples in a veterinary laboratory
    2. Process samples utilizing current technologies and safety procedures
    3. Dispose of samples according to established procedures and current laws
    4. Demonstrate proper log and record keeping in the laboratory
    5. Maintain a compound light microscope
    6. Utilize a compound light microscope
  2. Execute voided urine collection and handling
    1. Perform a urine dipstick test
    2. Use a refractometer to obtain USG measurement
    3. Demonstrate pH analysis on a urine sample
  3. Execute voided fecal collection and handling
    1. Set up for direct fecal examination
    2. Demonstrate proper fecal floatation technique
    3. Perform fecal smear for evaluation
  4. Summarize basic laboratory organization and best practices for safety and preservation of result quality
    1. Identify common blood tubes and preservatives used in veterinary medicine
    2. Demonstrate preparation of microhematocrit tubes for evaluation
    3. Prepare fecal flotation solutions and set up fecal flotations and direct smears for examination
    4. Discuss proper assistance for the preparation of various specimen staining techniques
    5. Show proper use of Personal Protection Equipment appropriate tothe laboratory environment
  5. Classify common external parasites, and perform diagnostic tests, treatment, and prevention of external parasitic infection
    1. Identify common external parasites associated with domestic species
    2. Describe treatments for appropriate control of external parasites
    3. Review life cycles of external parasites for owners
    4. Discuss zoonotic external parasites
  6. Summarize the legal role veterinary technicians play in educating clients about transmission of external zoonotic parasites
