AGV 164 - Clinical Mgmt Domestic Species Credits: 2 Lecture Hours: 1 Lab Hours: 2 Practicum Hours: 0 Work Experience: 0 Course Type: Voc/Tech This course covers the management, husbandry, restraint, and behavior of common livestock. This course includes biosecurity and jurisprudence of veterinary care in these species. Prerequisite: Acceptance to the DMACC Veterinary Assisting or Technology Programs. Competencies
- Demonstrate knowledge of basic large animal care
- Recognize common breeds of equine, bovine, ovine and swine
- List permanent ID methods used for large animals
- Implement sanitation procedures for animal holding and housing areas
- Summarize jurisprudence surrounding production animal medicine
- Differentiate domestic animal species- and species-specific behavior
- Recognize the differences in large animal species
- Identify the behaviors associated with each species
- Enumerate the specific needs of each species for appropriate care
- Discuss timing and types of estrus cycle and gestation
- Compare and contrast basic large animal restraint techniques
- Perform halter, tie and lead technique with horses and cattle
- Show proper application of an equine twitch
- Demonstrate application of bovine restraint techniques
- Discuss swine restraint techniques
- Execute the role of the veterinary assistant in necropsy procedures
- Record accurately observations made by the DVM
- Use proper terminology to identify various anatomical structures
- Complete submission forms to accompany sample submission to lab
- Demonstrate safe shipping requirements of biological samples
