AGV 165 - Clin Mgmt Lab/Exotic Species Credits: 2 Lecture Hours: 1 Lab Hours: 2 Practicum Hours: 0 Work Experience: 0 Course Type: Voc/Tech This course is designed to introduce the common species, husbandry procedures and basic nutrition, restraint and handling, common diseases, diagnostic procedures and medications used in various laboratory and exotic pet settings. Prerequisite: AGV 120 , AGV 128 , AGV 129 , AGV 231 , AGV 164 Competencies

- Apply knowledge of state, federal, and local animal welfare regulations

- Explain inadvisability of keeping wildlife as pets
- Summarize handling of non-human primates
- Recognize restraint devices used for NHP
- Discuss how to utilize common restraint devices for NHP
- Identify zoonotic diseases associated with non-human primates
- Categorize common hospital skills on birds, exotic animals, and fish
- Recognize common breed examples of companion birds, reptiles, amphibians and other common exotic pets
- Restrain caged birds, reptiles, amphibians, ferrets, and other common exotic pets
- Demonstrate knowledge of husbandry, nutrition, housing, and routine preventative procedure for common exotic species
- Supervise basic animal care procedures (e.g., feeding, watering, breeding, identification, caging, and aquarium care)
- Discuss administration of parenteral and oral medications using appropriate sites and routes for each species
- Assist in collection of appropriate body tissue or fluids from live animals and perform laboratory procedures
- Review basic aquaculture
- Review basic bee keeping
