AGV 151 - Intro Vet Tech Clinical Skills

This course introduces students to the basics of restraint for radiology, ultrasound, anesthesia monitoring and surgical preparation they will use in clinic as a veterinary assistant.
Prerequisite: AGV 120  , AGV 128  , AGV 129  , AGV 231  , AGV 164  
Competencies
  1. Perform basic animal grooming procedures on the canine and feline patient
    1. Demonstrate bathing on a canine or feline patient
    2. Trim nails on a patient
    3. Complete external expression of anal glands
    4. Apply topical ophthalmic medications
    5. Demonstrate proper ear cleaning technique
  2. Summarize concepts of radiology techniques
    1. Use proper PPE in radiology
    2. Demonstrate proficiency in restraint for: standard thoracic, abdominal and extremity radiology
    3. Practice effective post procedure sanitation
    4. Explain proper documentation and logs
  3. Examine basic concepts of surgery
    1. Identify equipment and functions
    2. Prepare surgical packs and gowns for sterilization
    3. Utilize autoclaves for instrument sterilization
  4. Discuss basic concepts of sedation monitoring
    1. List anesthetic agents and adjuncts
    2. Recognize and respond to veterinary anesthetic emergencies
    3. Describe the signs of discomfort in veterinary patients
    4. State common analgesic medications
  5. Demonstrate ability for miscellaneous assistant duties
    1. Administer otic medications
    2. Apply and remove minor bandages
    3. Practice administration of subcutaneous fluids to small animal patients
    4. Show proper technique for assembly and fitting of an Elizabethan collar
  6. Implement sanitation protocols for biosecurity
    1. Develop and understand tenets of asepsis and environmental control in surgery
    2. Demonstrate proper cleaning and maintenance techniques
