AGV 151 - Intro Vet Tech Clinical Skills Credits: 3 Lecture Hours: 2 Lab Hours: 2 Practicum Hours: 0 Work Experience: 0 Course Type: Voc/Tech This course introduces students to the basics of restraint for radiology, ultrasound, anesthesia monitoring and surgical preparation they will use in clinic as a veterinary assistant. Prerequisite: AGV 120 , AGV 128 , AGV 129 , AGV 231 , AGV 164 Competencies
- Perform basic animal grooming procedures on the canine and feline patient
- Demonstrate bathing on a canine or feline patient
- Trim nails on a patient
- Complete external expression of anal glands
- Apply topical ophthalmic medications
- Demonstrate proper ear cleaning technique
- Summarize concepts of radiology techniques
- Use proper PPE in radiology
- Demonstrate proficiency in restraint for: standard thoracic, abdominal and extremity radiology
- Practice effective post procedure sanitation
- Explain proper documentation and logs
- Examine basic concepts of surgery
- Identify equipment and functions
- Prepare surgical packs and gowns for sterilization
- Utilize autoclaves for instrument sterilization
- Discuss basic concepts of sedation monitoring
- List anesthetic agents and adjuncts
- Recognize and respond to veterinary anesthetic emergencies
- Describe the signs of discomfort in veterinary patients
- State common analgesic medications
- Demonstrate ability for miscellaneous assistant duties
- Administer otic medications
- Apply and remove minor bandages
- Practice administration of subcutaneous fluids to small animal patients
- Show proper technique for assembly and fitting of an Elizabethan collar
- Implement sanitation protocols for biosecurity
- Develop and understand tenets of asepsis and environmental control in surgery
- Demonstrate proper cleaning and maintenance techniques
