CRC 175 - Realtime Tech Applications

In this continuation course, students expand upon the computer-aided transcription concepts acquired in CRC150. Lecture time is devoted to the presentation of advanced principles and features, with a focus on using advanced software features to increase productivity. Using available tools to provide litigation support is also stressed. Lab time is devoted to the application of new skills in producing a variety of transcripts

Competencies
 

  1. Analyze the reporter’s role in providing litigation support.
    1. Discover opportunities to provide litigation support.
    2. Participate in research and group discussion about the role of litigation support in the preservation and advancement of the court reporting profession.
    3. Discuss hardware/software utilized in providing litigation support.
    4. Produce commonly requested file types (e.g. ASCII, PDF).
  2. Refine speaker identification practices.
    1. Select speaker identifications appropriate to a variety of job situations.
    2. Verify correct dictionary entries.
    3. Organize Speaker Table in Computer-Aided Transcription (CAT) software.
    4. Make use of visual aids for remembering speaker identifications/party and witness names.
    5. Write speaker identifications when writing realtime without verbal prompts.
  3. Plan for successful writing of a realtime job.
    1. Obtain job information.
    2. Determine best research sources.
    3. Research necessary terminology, attorney, and party information.
    4. Develop a job dictionary and/or add entries to the main dictionary, as appropriate.
    5. Set up writer and related hardware for realtime.
  4. Adapt reporting techniques to the needs of the job.
    1. Identify speakers in multi-speaker situations.
    2. Swear or affirm witnesses and/or interpreters.
    3. Interrupt the speaker when necessary to ensure an accurate and complete record.
    4. Obtain spellings of proper names.
    5. Use parentheticals to indicate nonverbal actions, discussions off the record, and the like.
  5. Construct professional transcripts, demonstrating knowledge and application of realtime translation technology and English skills through systematic testing and/or transcription projects.
    1. Prioritize research and preparation, choosing appropriate resources, to maximize realtime output.
    2. Evaluate realtime translation to assess accuracy.
    3. Select correct word choice for homonyms and frequently confused words.
    4. Infer intended strokes from incorrect steno when editing.
    5. Apply efficient editing practices (CAT software keyboard commands).
    6. Demonstrate good reference and proofreading skills by producing transcripts with the goal of zero errors but with an overall average of no more than one error per page.
    7. Create PDFs of completed transcripts for delivery and/or printing. 
    8. Complete indexing and archiving of job files.
  6. Use peer review to improve writing and editing skills.
    1. Compare realtime output to an assigned classmate when requested.
    2. Play the role of the proofreader to an assigned classmate when requested, making editing suggestions which include reference information.
    3. Using reference materials, verify suggestions made by a classmate proofreader for correctness before accepting or denying changes.
    4. Participate in group work/discussions about writing and editing skills.
  7. Write five pages of realtime with a minimum first-pass accuracy rate of 95%. 
    1. Locate the test file audio file.
    2. Connect the writer to CAT software.
    3. Open and name a realtime file using the convention StudentName_Test Number.
    4. Write the realtime test.
    5. Upload correct steno notes and transcript files within provided time limits.
    6. Submit a signed Academic Honesty Statement.
