CRC 190 - Realtime Court Reprtg Proc I Credits: 4 Lecture Hours: 3 Lab Hours: 2 Practicum Hours: 0 Work Experience: 0 Course Type: Voc/Tech A course to focus on freelance reporting procedures. Instruction will include the role of the reporter in depositions, the marking and handling of exhibits and notes, speaker identifications and interruptions, daily copy, videotaping, and computer-aided transcript preparation. Prerequisite: CRC 165 Prerequisite OR Corequisite: CRC 175 , CRC 180 , and CRC 183 Competencies
- Demonstrate an understanding of the role of the reporter in swearing or affirming witnesses and interpreters.
- Define the terms “affirmation” and “oath.”
- Administer an oath or affirmation in a simulated proceeding.
- Act as the freelance reporter during simulated depositions, performing all duties required of the reporter.
- Set up equipment.
- Research, as needed, and prepare for writing (to include setting up speaker identifications and job dictionaries, as appropriate).
- Swear in the witness.
- Write proceedings in realtime, using appropriate speaker identifications and correctly designating objections and changes in the questioning attorney.
- Mark and handle exhibits.
- Certify questions.
- Interrupt speakers as needed.
- Create and deliver accurate deposition transcripts.
- Select correct include file(s) for the transcript type.
- Accurately edit included pages with attention to proper formatting, spelling, capitalization, and transcription rules, utilizing the Department Style Manual as the source for style considerations.
- Edit the body of the transcript, utilizing the Department Style Manual and selecting appropriate print or online references, as needed, to verify spellings, capitalization, punctuation, and number formatting.
- Deliver the edited transcript to an assigned proofreader classmate for review.
- Research to verify and accept or disprove and deny proofreader’s changes.
- Finalize the transcript, run spell-check, and deliver (submit) the transcript to the instructor for grading by the required deadline.
- Produce all transcripts with the goal of zero errors but with an overall average of less than one error per page.
- Write simulated freelance proceedings in realtime and produce accurate transcripts thereof using reference books and Internet search tools to ensure proper editing.
- Write a variety of proceedings in realtime (including depositions and alternative assignments to include an administrative hearing, a statement, and/or a live or recorded segment of a City Council or similar meeting).
- Utilize appropriate speaker identification for the setting.
- Include required transcript parts, as appropriate (e.g. title page, index, stipulation, certification page, and signature page, as necessary).
- Accurately note required examination types, parentheticals, and/or indexing as appropriate to the proceeding.
- Edit the body of the transcript, utilizing the Department Style Manual and selecting appropriate print or online references, as needed, to verify spellings, capitalization, punctuation, and number formatting.
- Deliver the edited transcript to an assigned proofreader classmate for peer review.
- Research to verify and accept or disprove and deny proofreader’s suggested changes.
- Finalize the transcript, run spell-check, and deliver (submit) the transcript to the instructor for grading by the required deadline.
- Produce all transcripts with the goal of zero errors but with an overall average of less than one error per page.
- Summarize the role of a reporter in the discovery process for a variety of proceedings.
- List common realtime reporter duties in the discovery process.
- Discuss the realtime reporter’s impact on the process.
- Discuss potential impacts of reporter shortages on the discovery process.
- Discuss the reporter’s role in reading and signing of depositions.
- Analyze the respective roles of the reporter and the scopist in producing daily copy after participating in a mock daily copy deposition.
- Reflect on the use of videotape in freelance reporting settings and its impact on the court reporter.
- Identify potential issues related to reporting telephonic or Zoom/Teams depositions.
- Discuss the reporter’s role in remote proceedings after shadowing, interviewing, or hearing from a guest speaker freelance reporter regarding the topic.
- Engage with a reporter mentor.
- Email the reporter to request opportunity to shadow or visit.
- Shadow the reporter or meet in person/virtually to visit about “a day in the life” of the reporter.
- Reflect about experiences in a group discussion about experiences with the mentor reporter.
- Begin preparing for certification written knowledge testing.
- Review of technology terminology and operating systems, completing exercises and/or quizzing over the topic.
- Review of NCRA certifications and testing speeds, completing exercises and/or quizzing over the topic.
- Review selection of vocabulary, homonyms, and frequently confused words, passing quizzing over the topics.
