CRR 522 - Advanced Refinishing

This course covers the potential problems chemicals can cause in relation to their environment. Refinishing of sheet metal and plastic parts, replacement and preparation for refinishing will also be studied in the lab. Advanced automotive refinishing applications in a collision facility will be covered. Mill thickness will be studied to determine OEM allowances. Shop safety will be emphasized.
Prerequisite: CRR 150  , CRR 520

    1. Explain dangers of isocyanate absorption
    2. Demonstrate proper use of safety equipment and tools in the lab areas
    3. Organize and inspect spray environment to ensure compliance with federal, state and local regulations for safety and cleanliness
  2. Determine proper disposal of waste materials
    1. Explain proper disposal methods of booth filters
    2. Demonstrate proper use of thinner recyclers
    3. Demonstrate proper use of gun washing systems
  3. Demonstrate proper mixing equipment maintenance and operation
    1. Show knowledge of mixing computer system, ability to navigate the mixing computers software
    2. Show use of color scanners to read colors without the use of a paint code present
  4. Assess environmental imperfections in paint
    1. Demonstrate the prevention of dirt and dust in a paint surface.
    2. Show proper use of stat gun in a painting environment
    3. Show removing imperfections from sealers and base coats
  5. Evaluate substrate, type of finish, surface condition and film thickness
    1. Determine the type of finish and film thickness of the vehicle we are working on
    2. List any defects that may need addressed while refinishing the panels in addition to the collision damage
    3. Judge the panel to determine if a refinishing operation has already taken place
  6. Interpret Color theory
    1. Outline colors and how each color can affect the other
    2. Demonstrate knowledge of colors tints and ability to locate and understand the tinting chart
  7. Interpret tinting a color
    1. Demonstrate adjustment of formulas within the mixing system and see how changes can be made before paint is mixed
    2. Demonstrate tinting a color to a bendable match
  8. Determine the proper refinishing, color tinting, and blending techniques
    1. Show application of selected product on test panels; check for color match
    2. Show application of basecoat / clearcoat for panel blending or partial refinishing
    3. Show application of basecoat / clearcoat for overall refinishing
  9. Identify blending and how it’s used in a repair facility
    1. Summarize poor hiding colors, determine necessary action
    2. Summarize alternative color formulas to achieve a bendable match
  10. Demonstrate blending a panel and techniques needed to achieve a proper blend
    1. Demonstrate surface prep for a panel to blend
    2. Show proper blending techniques using adjustments of air pressure, gun arc, gun angle, gun distance, gun speed, and spray pattern overlap for the finish being applied
  11. Identify tri coat formulas
    1. Demonstrate mixing of a tri coat formula
    2. Make use of a letdown panel to ensure color match
  12. Apply Tri-coat color
    1. Explain application of three-stage paint system
    2. Demonstrate refinishing of a tri coat formula
    3. Demonstrate blending of a tri coat formula
