CRR 520 - Introduction to Refinishing

This course covers industry application of colors and clear coats and an overall understanding of refining products and equipment. This course includes the latest manufactures preferred methods for refinish repair using current colors and products. Application of paints will be emphasized.
Prerequisite OR Corequisite: CRR 150  
Competencies
  1. Evaluate necessary precautions with hazardous operations and materials
    1. Identify personal safety; eye, skin and respiratory protection
    2. Show proper use of required clothing and correct hand/eye protection
    3. Show proper use of safety equipment and PPE as repairs require
    4. Demonstrate knowledge of effects auto collision chemicals have on the body
  2. Discuss NIOSH rules and guidelines
    1. Explain the NIOSH approved (Fresh Air Make-Up system) personal painting/refinishing respirator system
    2. Outline proper maintenance in accordance with OSHA
    3. Demonstrate respirator change out schedule
    4. Complete a mask fit test
  3. Develop proper maintenance on paint booth equipment
    1. Identify proper filter replacement
    2. Demonstrate booth cleaning and maintenance of light fixtures, inside walls, ventilation chambers and related mechanical components of the paint booth
    3. Identify and maintain paint mixing and storage areas
  4. Develop proper paint preparation skills for refinishing
    1. Prepare OEM finishes for repairs
    2. Demonstrate proper paint prep for different refinish applications
    3. Prepare blend panel paint prep
  5. Choose appropriate HVLP spray gun dependent on task
    1. Demonstrate proper teardown and assembly of HVLP spray guns
    2. Determine condition of spray gun and related equipment (air hoses, regulators, air lines, air source and spray environment)
    3. Demonstrate setting-up (fluid needle, nozzle, and cap, adjusting, and testing spray gun using fluid, air and pattern control valves
  6. Develop an understanding of refinish products
    1. Identify paints and use of activators, reducers, and flex additives
    2. Demonstrate use of mixing scales and computer systems used to retrieve formulas
    3. Utilize flash times adequate to the paint being used
  7. Evaluate irregular paint conditions
    1. Identify a dry spray appearance in the paint surface, determine causes and corrections
    2. Identify overspray; determine causes and corrections
    3. Identify orange peal; determine causes and corrections
    4. Identify sags and runs, sanding marks, color mapping and fish eyes; determine cause and corrections to be made
  8. Select suitable refinishing products for bare metal applications
    1. Show proper steps in mixing self-etch and epoxy primers
    2. Demonstrate use of self-etch or epoxy primers
  9. Select Refinishing Products for Primer and sealer applications
    1. Demonstrate mixing of primers and sealers
    2. Demonstrate application of primers and sealers
  10. Develop refinish skills to apply base coat / clear coat
    1. Show ability to look up paint codes from manufacturer’s code
    2. Demonstrate mixing of base coat
    3. Show application of base coat
    4. Show application of clear coat
