SUR 910 - Certification Review I Credits: 2 Lecture Hours: 2 Lab Hours: 0 Practicum Hours: 0 Work Experience: 0 Course Type: Voc/Tech This course provides an overall review for the surgical technologist attempting the national certification examination. The course will assist the student in knowledge of all subject areas pertaining to the field of surgical technology. The course will provide the student with strategies and skills related to test-taking. Prerequisite: BIO 168 , BIO 173 , BIO 186 , SUR 105 , SUR 130 , SUR 150 , SUR 109 , SUR 140 . All completed with a “C”, or better prior to enrollment in this course. Competencies
- Conclude the best practice methods of preoperative preparation.
- Evaluate the components of the surgeon’s preference card.
- Demonstrate the use of personal protective equipment.
- Prepare the operating room for procedural use.
- Organize the proper instruments, supplies, and equipment for surgical procedures.
- Explain proper sterile technique throughout all preoperative preparation tasks.
- Participate in a pre-procedural briefing or “timeout.”
- Demonstrate patient safety principles regarding positioning and prepping patients for surgery.
- Critique all intraoperative procedures related to the role of the surgical technologist.
- Explain Standard and Universal Precautions in the operative environment.
- Describe surgical counts and when they need to be performed.
- Anticipate the steps of surgical procedures.
- Prioritize and explain the assembly, function, and disassembly of surgical instruments, suture, supplies, and equipment.
- Argue ethical and legal principles related to the care of the surgical patient.
- Perform proper medication administration and handling skills.
- Defend the appropriate handling of sharps and environmental hazards that occur during surgery.
- Evaluate the proper handling of fluids, tissues, and specimens.
- Compare the various methods of hemostasis, mechanical, thermal, and chemical.
- Justify the proper postoperative procedures related to the surgical technologist.
- Interpret blood loss and the strategies for replacement.
- Discuss a case debriefing with the surgical team.
- Justify and record usage of medications and amounts.
- Assess any postoperative findings, bleeding, hematoma, rash, etc.
- Perform appropriate cleanup and remove all environmental hazards.
- Defend knowledge of anatomy and physiology related to surgical procedures.
- Evaluate the following surgical pathologies; abnormal anatomy, disease processes, malignancies, and traumatic conditions.
- Interpret appropriate medical terminology and abbreviations.
- Compare and contrast study models to obtain a cohort specific strategy for the current national certification examination.
- Create test questions to enhance the content base for all cohort members.
- Design assigned capstone projects and relate them to the national certification examination, review content.
- Evaluate the performance of surgical team members.
