This course provides advanced study and application of prehospital assessment and management for patients experiencing medical, behavioral, and multisystem emergencies. Students integrate pathophysiology, pharmacology, and clinical decision-making to identify and treat conditions involving the neurological, endocrine, cardiac, respiratory, gastrointestinal, renal, and immune systems. Emphasis is placed on evidence-based interventions, effective communication, and patient-centered care across all age groups and special populations. Learners apply current AHA, NAEMSP, and national EMS guidelines to develop comprehensive treatment plans, coordinate with multidisciplinary teams, and document care accurately from initial contact through patient disposition.

    1. Perform structured primary, secondary, and ongoing assessments for medical patients
    2. Integrate clinical findings to formulate field impressions and initiate treatment plans
    3. Modify assessment for pediatric, geriatric, and special populations
  2. Evaluate Neurological Emergencies
    1. Manage altered mental status, stroke, seizures, and traumatic brain injury through proper assessment
    2. Apply stroke assessment tools (e.g., FAST, LVO screening) in order to initiate rapid transport
  3. Assess Endocrine Emergencies
    1. Manage conditions such as DKA, HHS, thyroid storm, and adrenal crisis through correct recognition
    2. Administer appropriate medications (e.g., dextrose, glucagon) in order to support metabolic stability
  4. Examine Cardiac and Shock Emergencies
    1. Treat shock (distributive, cardiogenic, hypovolemic, obstructive) using correct identification and evidence-based interventions
    2. Implement resuscitative measures including ACLS protocols and medication administration
  5. Analyze Respiratory Emergencies
    1. Manage upper and lower airway obstructions, asthma, COPD, and respiratory failure
    2. Apply advanced airway techniques, oxygen delivery, and ventilatory support devices (e.g., CPAP, BiPAP)
  6. Evaluate Gastrointestinal, Renal, and Hepatic Disorders
    1. Manage GI bleeding, bowel obstruction, pancreatitis, renal failure, and urologic emergencies through proper assessment
    2. Provide supportive care for fluid/electrolyte balance and pain management
  7. Assess Toxicology and Substance Use
    1. Recognize signs of overdose and toxic exposure
    2. Administer reversal agents (e.g., naloxone), coordinating with poison control resources
  8. Examine Allergy, Immunologic, and Infectious Diseases
    1. Manage allergic reactions and anaphylaxis through proper identification
    2. Initiate sepsis protocols, applying proper PPE and isolation precautions
  9. Assess Behavioral and Psychiatric Emergencies
    1. Evaluate patients in crisis, applying de-escalation techniques
    2. Coordinate with law enforcement or mental health resources as needed
  10. Analyze Special Population Considerations
    1. Adapt care for pediatric, geriatric, pregnant, and disabled patients
    2. Recognize obstetric complications in order to manage uncomplicated and emergency deliveries
  11. Demonstrate Pharmacological Interventions
    1. Administer medications using various routes and proper calculations
    2. Apply safety measures (e.g., “Six Rights,” error prevention, documentation) in medication administration
  12. Exhibit Evidence-Based Practice and Quality Improvement
    1. Apply current guidelines from AHA, NAEMSP, and other governing bodies
    2. Participate in case reviews and integrate feedback into clinical practice
  13. Demonstrate Effective Communication and Documentation
    1. Document medical care clearly and completely
    2. Use structured communication tools (e.g., SBAR, MIST) during patient handoffs
