EMS 423 - Paramedicine Lab 1 Credits: 3 Lecture Hours: 0 Lab Hours: 6 Practicum Hours: 0 Work Experience: 0 Course Type: Voc/Tech This course introduces students to core paramedic psychomotor and assessment skills through hands-on simulation and scenario-based learning. Emphasis is placed on developing proficiency in airway management, vascular access, medication administration, and comprehensive patient assessment across all age groups. Learners integrate anatomy, pathophysiology, and pharmacology knowledge to perform evidence-based interventions in simulated trauma, medical, obstetric, and pediatric emergencies. Students practice teamwork, communication, and clinical decision-making while demonstrating competency in EMT and advanced-level paramedic procedures in preparation for clinical rotations and field experience. Prerequisite: Admission to a paramedic program Competencies
- Demonstrate the ability to conduct comprehensive patient assessments (primary and secondary surveys)
- Develop patient care management plans across diverse medical and trauma presentations with increasing autonomy
- Interpret clinical findings and apply medical knowledge to support accurate field impressions and prehospital care decisions
- Evaluate the effectiveness of care provided and adapt treatment plans accordingly in dynamic prehospital environments
- Exhibit motor skill proficiency in patient care
- Establish intravenous (IV) access on simulated patients and mannequins under varying conditions
- Administer IV infusion and bolus medications in simulated settings, accurately calculating dosage and rate
- Perform intraosseous (IO) access procedures using simulation technology
- Demonstrate the ability to safely prepare and administer intramuscular (IM) medications using proper technique, site selection, and dosage verification
- Deliver positive pressure ventilation using a bag-valve-mask (BVM) across all patient age groups
- Intubate adult mannequins using oral endotracheal techniques and report success rates
- Insert supraglottic airways and confirm placement using appropriate verification methods
- Execute advanced airway maneuvers including suctioning, cricothyrotomy, and FBAO removal using Magill forceps
- Perform emergency procedures including needle decompression, synchronized cardioversion, defibrillation, and transcutaneous pacing using appropriate simulation tools
- Demonstrate high-quality chest compressions during simulated cardiac arrest scenarios
- Examine age-specific patient care
- Assess and manage patients across all age groups (neonate through geriatric) demonstrating age-appropriate communication, assessment techniques, and interventions
- Provide pediatric patient care including neonate, infant, toddler, preschool, school-age, and adolescent populations
- Deliver adult and geriatric care in simulated environments
- Adjust treatment approaches based on developmental stages, physiological differences, and psychosocial needs of patients by age group
- Analyze condition-based pathology:
- Recognize trauma-related complaints to ensure proper management, including pediatric and adult trauma scenarios
- Evaluate psychiatric and behavioral health emergencies using de-escalation and appropriate referral practices during interventions
- Assist with and manage normal and complicated obstetric deliveries, including breech, prolapsed cord, and postpartum hemorrhage (via simulation)
- Stabilize distressed neonates immediately following delivery using advanced pediatric life support protocols
- Assess cardiac pathologies for treatment, including acute coronary syndromes, cardiac arrest, and dysrhythmias
- Manage neurologic emergencies such as stroke, TIA, and altered mental status presentations
- Treat respiratory emergencies across age groups, including respiratory distress and arrest
- Identify and intervene in a variety of medical complaints including endocrine, gastrointestinal, toxicologic, infectious, and musculoskeletal conditions
- Apply clinical judgment in geriatric and pediatric-specific high-acuity scenarios using simulation and real patient interactions
- Demonstrate EMT Foundational Skills
- Insert oral and nasal airway adjuncts appropriately
- Suction the airway using appropriate technique for oral secretions
- Perform foreign body airway obstruction (FBAO) relief in adult and infant patients
- Administer oxygen via nasal cannula and face mask
- Ventilate patients of all age groups using BVM, ensuring proper technique and chest rise
- Apply hemorrhage control techniques including tourniquets and dressings
- Immobilize suspected spinal injuries using cervical collars and long boards
- Splint suspected long bone and joint injuries effectively
- Stabilize impaled-objects and soft-tissue injuries using appropriate techniques
- Perform uncomplicated field deliveries and provide immediate neonatal care
- Measure and document vital signs accurately and consistently.
- Conduct comprehensive physical assessments, identifying key clinical findings
- Perform high-quality CPR for neonate, pediatric, and adult patients per current AHA guidelines
