EMS 424 - Paramedicine Lab 2 Credits: 3 Lecture Hours: 0 Lab Hours: 6 Practicum Hours: 0 Work Experience: 0 Course Type: Voc/Tech This advanced laboratory course builds upon foundational paramedic skills through complex, high-fidelity simulations and scenario-based training. Students refine psychomotor proficiency in airway management, vascular access, cardiac care, and medication administration while integrating advanced assessment and clinical decision-making across all age groups. Emphasis is placed on rapid synthesis of patient findings, critical thinking in evolving emergencies, and effective team leadership during trauma and medical simulations. Learners demonstrate autonomy, situational awareness, and professional communication as they prepare for field internship and independent paramedic practice. - Evaluate core clinical and assessment skills
- Demonstrate the ability to conduct comprehensive patient assessments (primary and secondary surveys)
- Develop patient care management plans for implementation across diverse medical and trauma presentations with increasing autonomy
- Interpret clinical findings in order to apply medical knowledge and to support accurate field impressions and prehospital care decisions.
- Evaluate the effectiveness of care provided in order to adapt treatment plans accordingly in dynamic prehospital environments
- Demonstrate motor skill proficiency in patient care
- Establish intravenous (IV) access on simulated patients and mannequins under varying conditions
- Administer IV infusion and bolus medications in simulated settings, accurately calculating dosage and rate
- Perform intraosseous (IO) access procedures using simulation technology
- Demonstrate the ability to safely prepare and administer intramuscular (IM) medications using proper technique, site selection, and dosage verification
- Deliver positive pressure ventilation using a bag-valve-mask (BVM) across all patient age groups
- Intubate adult mannequins using oral endotracheal techniques, including the report of success rates.
- Insert supraglottic airways, confirming placement using appropriate verification methods
- Execute advanced airway maneuvers, including suctioning, cricothyrotomy, and FBAO removal using Magill forceps
- Perform emergency procedures, including needle decompression, synchronized cardioversion, defibrillation, and transcutaneous pacing using appropriate simulation tools
- Demonstrate high-quality chest compressions during simulated cardiac arrest scenarios
- Evaluate age-specific patient care
- Assess patients across all age groups (neonate through geriatric) demonstrating age-appropriate communication, assessment techniques, and interventions.
- Provide pediatric patient care including neonate, infant, toddler, preschool, school-age, and adolescent populations.
- Deliver adult and geriatric care in simulated environments.
- Adjust treatment approaches based on developmental stages, physiological differences, and psychosocial needs of patients by age group.
- Manage trauma-related complaints, including pediatric and adult trauma scenarios.
- Evaluate psychiatric and behavioral health emergencies using de-escalation and appropriate referral practices during interventions
- Assist with normal and complicated obstetric deliveries, including breech, prolapsed cord, and postpartum hemorrhage (via simulation)
- Stabilize distressed neonates immediately following delivery using advanced pediatric life support protocols
- Assess cardiac pathologies for proper treatment, including acute coronary syndromes, cardiac arrest, and dysrhythmias
- Manage neurologic emergencies, such as stroke, TIA, and altered mental status presentations
- Treat respiratory emergencies, including respiratory distress and arrest, across age groups
- Identify a variety of medical complaints, including endocrine, gastrointestinal, toxicologic, infectious, and musculoskeletal conditions, for proper intervention
- Apply clinical judgment in geriatric and pediatric-specific high-acuity scenarios using simulation and real patient interactions
