CRR 406 - Intro. to Collision Repair

An understanding of correct force applied to metal by use of hammer/dolly techniques will be taught. The course will also cover understanding how damage transfers on metal and the use of PPE for the different jobs in a collision repair facility. Safety is emphasized.
Corequisite: CRR 150  and CRR 311  and CRR 408  and CRR 520  
Competencies
  1. Determine safety and personal health hazards according to OSHA guidelines
    1. Identify personal safety, including eye, skin, and respiratory protection
    2. Show proper use of required clothing and correct hand/foot protection
    3. Examine hazardous chemicals related to specified tasks.
  2. Demonstrate understanding of PPE equipment for related tasks
    1. Demonstrate proper selection of job specific PPE related to task
    2. Show proper use of job specific PPE
    3. Recognize hazardous chemicals while working on specified tasks.

    1. Identify types of metals used in vehicle construction
    2. Identify thickness of steel and techniques used to repair specific metals
  4. Develop metal finishing techniques
    1. Demonstrate hammer and dolly techniques to repair dents
    2. Make use of proper grinder techniques
    3. Identify how heat transfers within a grinding application
  5. Classify severity of damaged areas
    1. Identify tools required to repair differently damaged areas
    2. Determine location of dent and complexities that could prevent repairs
  6. Evaluate modifications, straightening, and rough-out contours of damaged panels to establish a suitable condition for body filling
    1. Determine direction of impact and force used
    2. Repair surface irregularities on a damaged body panel
  7. Apply correct abrasives to be used for the repair
    1. Use various abrasives to remove paint finish and prepare for filler
    2. Demonstrate correct abrasive choice to prep nondamaged areas for proper adhesion with primer surfacers
  8. Choose body fillers to be used in different repairs
    1. Identify what point metal finishing can be stopped and fillers can be applied
    2. Understanding the difference between spot fillers, body fillers, and fiberglass fillers
    3. Demonstrate proper mixing of body filler
  9. Demonstrate knowledge of filler shaping
    1. Demonstrate proper application techniques and shape before and during curing
    2. Apply varying abrasive grits to shape, finish, and featheredge filler
  10. Determine surface preparation of filler, metal surface, and surrounding area for primers/surfacers
    1. Identify areas that need refinishing and can be dry sanded
    2. Demonstrate proper use of dust extraction tools to prep for primer surfacer adhesion
    3. Demonstrate feather edging of damaged areas to be refinished
