ES4961 - Care of Sick or Injured Persons While On Campus/Evening Health and Accident Emergencies

  1. Institutional Regulation

    Campus Health is a medical/wellness service available to currently enrolled DMACC students. Campus Health is established as an office setting to serve students with services such as a Nurse Practitioner with scheduled clinic hours, health education and wellness offerings. Campus Health will not be called to attend an emergency outside of the office setting or for transfer of the already identified ill or injured person.
     
  2. Procedure: Ankeny Campus/Evening Health/Accident Emergencies
    1. Emergency Care
      1. In the case of a medical emergency on campus to any faculty/staff, visitor or student who is not currently in the Campus Health Office, Security is to be notified immediately at 964-6500 and 911 emergency services are to be activated. Security is identified as the preferred first responder to medical incidents on the DMACC Ankeny campus and can attend to the medical situation until emergency services arrives on campus to take over the care of the ill or injured person.
      2. If the ill or injured person does not agree to be transported via ambulance services, they are responsible for arranging transportation for any further/follow-up care. DMACC employees are not responsible and it is not advised that transportation by other DMACC employees be arranged.
      3. DMACC will not assume liability for transportation costs or medical bills.
    2. Care of Less Serious Illness or Injury
      1. Currently enrolled students can utilize services of Campus Health if they are able to arrive to Campus Health under their own power. Campus Health is not intended to be an Urgent Care or Emergency facility. Emergent situations will be advised to call 911 for emergency services and transport if deemed necessary. Campus Health Nurse Practitioner can care for student if the visit occurs during the Nurse Practitioner’s scheduled DMACC office hours. Outside of the Nurse Practitioner office hours and if condition requires services outside the scope of DMACC Campus Health the student will be referred to their primary physician or local Urgent Care location for follow-up.
      2. DMACC faculty/staff are to utilize their insurance and follow-up with their primary physician for any medical illness/issue. For injuries that occur at work on the DMACC campus, faculty/staff should review the protocol for Workman’s Compensation-“What to do for injuries on Campus”, on the Human Resources website or contact HR for instructions for medical follow-up.
    3. Dispensing of Medicine
      1. The Campus Health Specialist only upon the direct order of the Nurse Practitioner will administer prescription medicine and treatments.
      2. Any previously prescribed drugs taken by student will be supplied and administered by the student. For other medications, such as injectable medications, student may arrange for assistance of Campus Health Specialist if mutually agreed upon between student/Campus Health Specialist and Nurse Practitioner. For mediations outside of scope of Campus Health, student will be advised to follow-up with primary or establish care with a local physician for administration. Student will be given referral information and contact numbers from Campus Health Specialist.
    4. Reporting of Accidents
      1. For accidents/injuries that happen to students on Campus in their class-the instructor should be notified and either the student or instructor should initiate the online incident report found on the Safety website. Student can utilize their insurance and see primary physician or local Urgent Care for any needed medical follow-up. A visit to Campus Health can also be made for evaluation if during office hours and Campus Health Specialist is available, note-if injury is more severe and/or if injury occurs outside of scheduled Nurse Practitioner DMACC office hours student may be referred to primary physician or local Urgent Care for treatment and/or follow-up care.
      2. For accidents/injuries that happen to students on Campus but not in the classroom should notify Security for an Incident Report. Medical evaluation/follow-up should take place with their primary physician or local Urgent Care. Medical evaluation /follow-up can be done in Campus Health if during scheduled office hours and Campus Health Specialist is available. If injury is beyond scope of Campus Health and/or is outside of scheduled Nurse Practitioner office hours, students may be referred to their primary physician or local Urgent Care for evaluation/follow-up care. Campus Health Specialist can also initiate an Incident Report
      3. For accidents that happen to work-study students or faculty/staff during scheduled DMACC work hours are to follow-up with Unity Point Occupational Medicine as per Human Resources protocol. Visit the HR website or call HR to speak with someone about process/protocol and any mandatory paperwork. An Incident Report should be initiated and filled out by the work-study student, faculty/staff member or supervisor. The online Incident Report can be found on the Safety website. Security can also be notified to initiate the Incident Report.
      4. If an injury results from a physical assault, report it immediately to Security and Vice President of Enrollment Services.
  3. Procedure: Boone, Carroll, Newton, Perry, Southridge, Urban and West Campuses
    1. Emergency Care.
      1. People at these campus locations, who are first to respond are encouraged to call 911 and/or Security if security is available on your campus.
      2. If the ill or injured person does not agree to be transported via ambulance services, they are responsible for arranging transportation for any further/follow-up care. DMACC employees are not responsible and it is not advised that transportation by other DMACC employees be arranged.
      3. DMACC will not assume liability for transportation costs or medical bills.
      4. Currently enrolled students from other campus locations can utilize services of Campus Health if they are able to arrive to Campus Health under their own power. Students must also be currently enrolled for that semester to seek Campus Health services. Campus Health is not intended to be an Urgent Care or Emergency facility. Emergent situations will be advised to call 911 from emergency services and transport if deemed necessary. Campus Health Nurse Practitioner can care for student if the visit occurs during the Nurse Practitioner’s scheduled DMACC office hours.       2. If injury results from physical assault, it must be reported to Security and the appropriate Dean/Provost.
