ES4549 - Course Substitution Procedure

Students may be allowed to substitute degree requirements with a course that has similar competencies.
- Procedure
- Course substitution is defined as “the replacement of one course with another.” Courses considered to be a higher level course in the subject matter as determined by the program chair will not be considered a course substitution and will not be counted toward credit substitution maximum.
- Courses designated as core for a particular degree or diploma may not be substituted with noncore courses.
- Course substitution for program requirements will be allowed only:
- In clearly warranted situations, such as a scheduling conflict beyond a student’s control.
- When a student clearly demonstrates knowledge/competency in the subject area for which a substitution is requested and only when such knowledge/competency is accurately assessed through measures such as testing, documentation, and/or certification.
- When the substituted course reflects similar or complementary content/skills.
- As a reasonable accommodation for a student with a disability. Students with disabilities requesting course substitution must follow procedures within ES4610 (ES4610 ).
- In programs equal to or exceeding twenty-four (24) semester credit hours, no more than one-sixth (1/6) of the total number of credits required for graduation may be substituted.
- In programs of fewer than twenty-four (24) semester credit hours, only one course of up to four (4) semester credit hours may be substituted.
- The “Course Substitution Form” must be completed by the Program/Division Chairperson and submitted to the Provost, Academic Dean, and Registrar/Director of Student Development for approval.
- When a substitution request originating within one program/department pertains to a course offered within another program/department, the approval of the appropriate second dean must be secured.
- If the Registrar’s Office, the Provost, and the Academic Dean cannot agree on the proposed course substitution, the request shall be forwarded to the Executive Vice President of Academic Affairs for mediation.
