ES4531 - Auditing a Class

Procedure

Section: EDUCATIONAL SERVICES PROCEDURES

SubSection: STUDENT RECORDS

Master List Section: Student Services

  1. Institutional Regulations
    1. The Board of Directors of DMACC confers upon the staff the power to establish academic standards as they relate to the educational process.
    2. Audit enrollment in courses provides a student with the opportunity to attend a class as a non-credit participant.
    3. Financial aid cannot be awarded, and eligibility determined, for classes that do not count toward degree, certificate or other recognized credential which includes coursework that is audited.
  2. Procedure
    1. Course Participation
      1. Students may enroll in most courses on an audit basis. Audit enrollment may be denied in select course based on high demand, prerequisite knowledge or skills or other criteria. For example, a course with practicum or clinical experience may not be appropriate for audit participation.
      2. When allowed to enroll on an audit basis, students are expected to be active participants in the course but may be excluded from participation in portions of the course, such as laboratory activities or special projects, at the discretion of the instructor.
    2. Registration Procedures
      1. Enrollment procedures:
        1. Students registering to audit must get an instructor’s signature on a Registration form or Drop/Add form that will be submitted to the Student Services office on their campus. Online students must get an instructor’s approval on the Class Full/Instructor Approval Required form.
        2. The last date for a student to change a course from credit to audit is designated as the 50th class day for fall and spring semesters. Courses that do not follow the normal semester schedule will have prorated last dates. These dates can be obtained from the Registrar’s Office. Students may change a course from credit to audit status only with instructor’s permission.
        3. Students may not change from audit to credit status after the end of the last day of free drop period for each part of term.
        4. The financial aid office will monitor changes in the student’s academic status.
    3. No credit will be received for the course, but a grade of “N” will be recorded on the permanent transcript. Regular tuition and fees will be charged for auditing a course, regardless of the length and scope of the audit.
