CRR 409 - Advanced Collision Repair

This course will cover how to repair cracks, holes and tears of plastic/SMC components with respect to OEM procedure limitations. Use of seam sealers and adhesives in the repair facility will apply along with the identification of seam sealer and adhesives. Instruction on replication of OEM applications on collision repairs will be taught.
Prerequisite: CRR 150  
Competencies
 

  1. Analyze necessary precautions with hazardous operations and materials
    1. Examine safety and personal health hazards
    2. Demonstrate proper PPE as per specific job tasks
  2. Determine OEM repair standards within plastic repair
    1. Show how to look up OEM repair options for plastic that needs repair
    2. Decide if an item can be repaired or cannot be repaired due to OEM requirements from radar sensors, advanced collision detection or parking aids
  3. Discuss types of plastic, analyze damage, and determine repair process
    1. Identify the types of plastics
    2. Identify the types of plastic repair procedures to be used
    3. Show steps used to clean and prepare the surface of plastic parts
  4. Determine appropriate surface preparation for composite repairs
    1. Select and use recommended abrasives specific to the repair
    2. Demonstrate and use backing panels (build when applicable) and reinforce back side of repair
    3. Make use of adhesion promotor
  5. Determine how to repair composite panels
    1. Demonstrate removal of paint finish
    2. Explain replacement of bonded rigid exterior composite body panels
    3. Demonstrate repairs to rigid and flexible plastics
  6. Identify damage to SMC / fiberglass components
    1. Demonstrate repairs to fiberglass reinforced composites
    2. Show application of two-part component finishing filler to minor surface imperfections and dry sand the area
    3. Explain pinholes in filler and acknowledge ways to avoid them during the repair
  7. Develop skills to use specialized plastic repair equipment
    1. Demonstrate use of a plastic nitrogen welder
    2. Show how a repair can be strengthened using different methods including a hot stapler
    3. Demonstrate repair to a torn or broken tab
  8. Select correct adhesives for different repairs
    1. Demonstrate ability to select proper adhesives for repairs to be completed
    2. Show attaching a skin or patch to a metal component with panel bond
  9. Identify OEM use of seam sealers
    1. Identify locations of seam sealers on OEM panels and
    2. Identify locations seam sealer needs to be applied on replacement panels
  10. Compare different types of OEM seam sealer applications
    1. Demonstrate replication techniques to achieve OEM standards on door skins
    2. Show replication techniques to achieve OEM standards on trunk pans or quarter panels
    3. Demonstrate replication techniques to achieve OEM standards on roof skins
