DSL 210 - CDL ELDT Driver Training

This course is designed to familiarize and orient students to safe driving practices of a commercial vehicle. Instruction includes training with commercial vehicle on both the range and road. This course satisfies all Federal behind the wheel curriculum requirements for students seeking a CDL from the Iowa DOT.
Prerequisite OR Corequisite: DSL 110  
Competencies
  1. Demonstrate basic operator knowledge of a commercial vehicle
    1. Identify vehicle component and controls needed for operation
    2. Practice vehicle inspections and basic commercial vehicle operations ensuring safe vehicle operation
  2. Evaluate brake system for serviceability
    1. Describe air brake system
    2. Verify proper adjustment of air brake components
    3. Perform inspections and tests to verify safe operation
  3. Demonstrate basic vehicle control skills on a closed range
    1. Demonstrate ability to proficiently operate commercial vehicle
    2. Demonstrate ability to proficiently maneuver commercial vehicle
    3. Demonstrate safe judgement while operation commercial vehicle
  4. Demonstrate specifically identified operations required for commercial drivers
    1. Demonstrate straight line backing
    2. Demonstrate backing along a curved path
    3. Demonstrate backing up to a loading dock
  5. Demonstrate proficiency while driving on a public road
    1. Demonstrate ability to proficiently operate commercial vehicle

  6. Evaluate driving conditions using recommended searching methods
    1. Demonstrate basic practices of a safe driver
    2. Exercise clear communication and use of signals with other vehicles

  7. Demonstrate use of log book as required for a commercial driver
