MFG 403 - Basic Die Making Lab Credits: 6 Lecture Hours: 0 Lab Hours: 12 Practicum Hours: 0 Work Experience: 0 Course Type: Voc/Tech Introducing the student to basic diemaking procedures as they construct a blank die, piercing die and a forming die. Prerequisite: MFG 270 , MFG 271 , MFG 356 , MFG 354 , MFG 337 , MFG 338 Corequisite: MFG 402 Competencies
- Examine shop safety
- Identify common shop hazards
- Demonstrate safety as it applies to common shop equipment
- Maintain all tooling and equipment (student or school property) in accordance with each individual manufacturer
- Perform required daily maintenance
- Demonstrate appropriate care and use of machines
- Demonstrate proper care of all inspection equipment
- Machine Die components
- Saw proper materials to dimension
- Machine die components using mills, lathes, & grinders
- Drill and/or tap necessary holes in tool steel materials
- Examine the safety concerns related to heat treating steel
- Explain how parts heated to1750 degrees Fahrenheit are handle safely
- Demonstrate the safe use of stainless steel wrap
- Demonstrate the safe use of a heat treating oven
- Harden tool steel components
- Heat treat die components to proper hardened state as required by the die design
- Temper die components to relieve stress
- Assess proper steels according to die application
- Determine proper steel types from blueprints
- Harden and temper steel according to application
- Test hardened components for correct Rockwell hardness
- Critique shop work
- Evaluate workload and determine best time management according to machine availability
- Determine best method of processing die components
- Manufacture the following single station basic dies
- Build a blank and shallow draw die (ashtray die)
- Build a pierce die (round die)
- Build a compound die (washer die)
- Build a bend die (U-bend die)
- Build a blank-thru die (rectangular die)
- Assemble die components
- Grind die components after heat treat
- Lap dowel holes for doweling purposes
- Select proper die springs according to pressure requirements
- Select proper fasteners to mount die components
- Align punch and die contours to establish proper cutting clearance
- Transfer screw and dowel holes
- Fit punch(es) into punch plates(s)
- Sharpen die components
- Mount die members to die set
- Assess stock strip material
- Locate proper sheet metal according to piece part requirements
- Shear sheet metal to proper width
- Evaluate a punch press
- List safety rules as applied to dies and presses
- Identify all punch press controls and safety features
- Mount die into a punch press
- Set press shut height and knock-out system
- Create piece part samples from a die
- Trouble-shoot die(s) as required
- Evaluate a press brake
- List safety rules as applied to dies and presses

- Mount die into a break press
