MAP 228 - Med Lab Procedures II

Students will use critical thinking skills to incorporate cognitive knowledge in the performance of psychomotor and affective domains during skill development in venipuncture, capillary puncture, hematology testing, blood chemistry analysis, immunology testing with lab test reporting and documentation. ECG acquisition, patient education, compliance with OSHA, CLIA and quality control requirements. Use and routine maintenance of standard laboratory equipment. Proof of completion of Healthcare Provider CPR training. 
Prerequisite: Grade of “C” or better in MAP 225 .
Corequisite: MAP 348  
Competencies
  1. Perform blood collection techniques
    1. Obtain blood using venipuncture methods
    2. Obtain blood using the capillary puncture method
  2. Perform hematology, blood chemistry, and immunology testing 
    1. Obtain appropriate specimen collection
    2. Properly label specimen
    3. Test specimen according to established instructions and guidelines
    4. Report lab test results and documentation. 
  3. Perform ECG acquisition
    1. Instruct the patient regarding the procedure
    2. Set up the procedure
    3. Acquire the ECG recording according to protocol
    4. Report the results
    5. Document the procedure
  4. Comply with OSHA, CLIA and quality control requirements

    1. Maintain patient log books for CLIA waived laboratory testing

    2. Perform a quality control measure

    3. Dispose of regulated medical waste

  5. Adhere to protocols and guidelines for reporting laboratory test results

    1. Differentiate between normal and abnormal test results

    2. Maintain laboratory test results using flow sheets

    3. Reassure a patient of the accuracy of test results

  6. Apply concepts of nutrition as it relates to patient needs

    1. Instruct a patient according to patient’s special dietary needs

    2. Show awareness of patient’s concerns regarding a dietary change

    3. Coach patient’s regarding health maintenance.
