MAP 225 - Med Lab Procedures I

Introduction to the medical laboratory. Students will use critical thinking skills to incorporate cognitive knowledge in the performance of psychomotor and affective domains during practice of giving patient instructions, obtaining specimens, performing routine urinalysis, microbiologic testing and quality control procedures. Includes basic math and units of measure. Adhering to standard precautions, disposing of biohazardous materials, performing routine maintenance of clinical equipment and using methods of quality control are also covered. Includes basics of first aid, emergency preparedness, and the study of OSHA and CLIA regulations.

  6. Define the principles of standard precautions 
    1. Select appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) for all body fluids, non-intact skin, and mucous membranes   
    2. List Center for Disease Control (CDC) regulations that impact healthcare practices
  7. Identify components of safety and protective practices in a healthcare environment 
    1. List fundamental principles for evacuation of a healthcare setting 
    2. Apply fire safety and prevention guidelines for the medical office 
    3. Comply with safety signs, safety symbols, and labels 
  8. Analyze basic units of measurement in the metric and household system     
    1. Convert among measurement systems.  
    2. Demonstrate knowledge of basic math computations.
