Biotechnology, AA

The Biotechnology Associate in Arts degree is designed for students who plan to transfer to a four-year college after completing the program. The AA degree is structured to prepare students to transfer into a wide range of majors including Genetics, Medicine, Pharmacology, Cell Biology, Molecular Biology or Biochemistry, etc. The program includes many lab-based courses, which enable students to apply what they learn in chemistry, math and statistics, biology, microbiology, genetics and molecular biology. Specific skills such as written and oral communications, critical thinking, problem-solving, computer skills and small-group collaboration are an integral part of the program. With the hands-on lab experience provided during the program, you will also qualify to work in research laboratories at your transfer institution, which is a major advantage as you continue your career in the biological sciences.

Program Entry Requirements

  1. Complete an application for admission.
  2. Satisfy the assessment requirement.
  3. Attend any required information/registration session.
  4. Must submit proof of one year of high school chemistry or Academic Achievement Chemistry I & II or successful completion of CHM 122 .
  5. Must submit proof of two years of high school algebra or MAT 063  & MAT 073 .
  6. Demonstrate satisfactory writing skills on college entrance or assessment exam.

Students start Fall or Spring semester.

Graduation Requirements

To earn a Biotechnology AA or AS degree, a student must be accepted into the Biotechnology program, complete all coursework as prescribed and maintain a 2.0 grade point average.

Note:


To complete this program, you must meet the Diversity Requirement with a grade of “C” or higher. See the AA /AS  section of this catalog for more information about which courses can count toward this requirement.

In addition to the basic degree requirements, many four-year programs will require additional classes that can also be taken at DMACC including calculus (MAT 211  and/or MAT 217 ) and physics (PHY 213  and PHY 223 ). Depending on the program being considered, CHM 263  and CHM 273  may also be taken.
