ATR 201 - Automation and Instrumentation

This course explores manufacturing and process automation control systems while applying abilities, techniques, and knowledge learned throughout the program. Students will develop a control system from conception to completion.
Prerequisite: ELT 642  and ELT 125  , and ELT 722  
Competencies

    1. Apply project planning tools to organize a project
    2. Track project progress, adjusting schedules in response to constraints
    3. Document project milestones and deliverables using clear technical writing standards
  2. Design an integrated control system for an automation project
    1. Implement control logic for integration with sensors, actuators, motor controllers, and human-machine interfaces (HMIs)
    2. Test control programs using offline tools or live systems to verify functionality and system behavior
    3. Optimize control logic for performance, reliability, and maintainability
  3. Create a workcell that demonstrates automation principles
    1. Define system behavior using flowcharts, ladder logic, or function block diagrams
    2. Integrate sensors, actuators, and robotic elements for a controls process
    3. Document the complete system with wiring diagrams, layout drawings, and component lists
  4. Integrate hardware components using proper wiring techniques
    1. Select correct wiring types, connectors, and enclosures based on application
    2. Connect input/output devices to controllers following schematics and wiring standards
    3. Ensure proper grounding, shielding, and cable routing to reduce electrical noise
  5. Troubleshoot automation systems using systematic diagnostic methods
    1. Use software tools to trace faults
    2. Apply root cause analysis to resolve programming, wiring, or device issues
    3. Document troubleshooting steps and solutions for technical reporting
  6. Commission integrated automation systems for ongoing functionality
    1. Perform routine inspections and preventive maintenance on control equipment
    2. Use historical data and system diagnostics to predict failures before they occur
    3. Maintain accurate service logs and maintenance documentation
  7. Communicate technical information effectively
    1. Create clear and concise technical documentation
    2. Present project outcomes and system designs
    3. Collaborate with team members using effective communication strategies
  8. Demonstrate safe practices in the design, installation, and operation of automation systems
    1. Mitigate identified electrical, mechanical, and environmental hazards during system development and testing
    2. Apply appropriate lockout/tagout (LOTO), personal protective equipment (PPE), and emergency procedures during lab or field work
    3. Incorporate safety features such as emergency stops, limit switches, and interlocks into control system design
    4. Conduct risk assessments and safety reviews before system commissioning
