ATR 201 - Automation and Instrumentation Credits: 4 Lecture Hours: 1 Lab Hours: 6 Practicum Hours: 0 Work Experience: 0 Course Type: Voc/Tech This course explores manufacturing and process automation control systems while applying abilities, techniques, and knowledge learned throughout the program. Students will develop a control system from conception to completion. Prerequisite: ELT 642 and ELT 125 , and ELT 722 Competencies
- Apply project management techniques
- Apply project planning tools to organize a project
- Track project progress, adjusting schedules in response to constraints
- Document project milestones and deliverables using clear technical writing standards
- Design an integrated control system for an automation project
- Implement control logic for integration with sensors, actuators, motor controllers, and human-machine interfaces (HMIs)
- Test control programs using offline tools or live systems to verify functionality and system behavior
- Optimize control logic for performance, reliability, and maintainability
- Create a workcell that demonstrates automation principles
- Define system behavior using flowcharts, ladder logic, or function block diagrams
- Integrate sensors, actuators, and robotic elements for a controls process
- Document the complete system with wiring diagrams, layout drawings, and component lists
- Integrate hardware components using proper wiring techniques
- Select correct wiring types, connectors, and enclosures based on application
- Connect input/output devices to controllers following schematics and wiring standards
- Ensure proper grounding, shielding, and cable routing to reduce electrical noise
- Troubleshoot automation systems using systematic diagnostic methods
- Use software tools to trace faults
- Apply root cause analysis to resolve programming, wiring, or device issues
- Document troubleshooting steps and solutions for technical reporting
- Commission integrated automation systems for ongoing functionality
- Perform routine inspections and preventive maintenance on control equipment
- Use historical data and system diagnostics to predict failures before they occur
- Maintain accurate service logs and maintenance documentation
- Communicate technical information effectively
