2. Evaluate infection control
   1. Practice infection control by properly donning and doffing personal protective equipment, using the appropriate personal protective equipment when appropriate, and washing/sanitizing hands
   2. Clean and disinfect equipment properly
3. Evaluate ethics in the healthcare setting
4. Support accurate use of the electronic medical record
   1. Document thoroughly in the patient’s medical record
   2. Navigate an electronic medical record to obtain a patient’s pertinent medical and therapeutic history
5. Maintain confidentiality
   1. Abide by all state and federal laws
   2. Abide by all policies at each clinical site
6. Evaluate patient responses to respiratory therapies and make evidence-based modifications to the treatment plan 
   1. Recommend treatment based on patient diagnosis
   2. Recommend adjustments in fluid balance and electrolyte therapy
   3. Recommend changes for patient positioning, oxygen therapy, humidification, airway clearance, and hyperinflation
   4. Recommend pharmacological interventions and changes to the drug, the administration, the frequency mode, or the concentration for medications
   5. Provide respiratory care in high risk situations
   6. Recommend changes for patient positioning, oxygen therapy, humidification, airway clearance, hyperinflation, and mechanical ventilation
7. Conduct family and patient education regarding safety and infection control, home care and related equipment, lifestyle changes, disease/condition management
8. Perform routine respiratory care
   1. Perform vital signs assessment efficiently and effectively to determine accurate values
   2. Perform oxygen therapy
   3. Perform airway clearance techniques
   4. Perform suctioning of the airway
   5. Administer aerosolized medications
   6. Provide adequate humidification
   7. Draw an arterial blood gas correctly
   8. Classify arterial blood gas results
9. Assist a physician/provider in performing procedures such as intubation, bronchoscopy, thoracentesis, tracheotomy, chest tube insertion, insertion of arterial or venous catheter, conscious sedation, cardioversion, and withdrawal of life support
10. Perform adult critical care under direct supervision of respiratory therapist
    1. Recommend insertion or change in artificial airways
    2. Demonstrate the ability to assess and manage artificial airways 
    3. Identify abnormal EKG findings, determine appropriate treatments, and apply ACLS guidelines in patient care
    4. Initiate ventilatory support for patients as indicated and monitor response to ensure effective respiratory care
    5. Discontinue treatment safely when clinically appropriate based on patient response
11. Select appropriate mechanical ventilation strategies
    1. Display competency in making ventilator changes based on oxygenation and ventilation status
    2. Troubleshoot mechanical ventilation and patient synchrony
    3. Wean appropriate patients from mechanical ventilation
    4. Extubate when appropriate
12. Reinforce appropriate use of critical care equipment
    1. Change ventilator circuits
    2. Demonstrate competence in adult critical care equipment
13. Determine treatment using data obtained from critically ill adult patients
    1. Interpret critical care data
    2. Recommend changes in the treatment plan 
    3. Interpret information from physiologic monitors used in critical care settings
14. Determine therapy for neonatal and pediatric conditions
    1. Assess neonatal and pediatric patients
    2. Summarize the role of the respiratory therapist during high-risk deliveries
    3. Identify signs, symptoms, and severity of respiratory distress in the newborn
15. Evaluate oxygenation and ventilation strategies used in the neonatal and pediatric population
    1. Demonstrate the use of oxygen delivery devices 
    2. Demonstrate proper administration of bronchodilator therapy to neonatal and pediatric patients
16. Evaluate ways to monitor neonatal and pediatric patients
    1. Observe proper use of transcutaneous monitoring
    2. Observe capillary gas sampling
17. Demonstrate techniques used in the care of critically ill neonatal and prediatric patients
    1. Apply mechanical ventilation in neonates, infants, and children
    2. Observe the set-up and use of specialty gases
    3. Earn NRP certification
