CRC 275 - Internship

Internships are arranged by the instructor and will include a minimum of 40 hours of actual writing time. Students are mentored by supervising freelance and official reporters. Students will be required to produce transcripts from their experiences consistent with NCRA-approved program requirements. Transcripts are for grading purposes only and are not to be sold. Students do not serve in the capacity of an actual reporter during internship. Coursework for the class includes resume and application letter preparation, job-seeking skills, review of the Code of Professional Ethics, income tax and financial planning information for the reporter, a review of realtime reporting literature, and oral and written reports of the internship experience. Students also practice research skills using both print media and the Internet.

Competencies
 

  1. Prepare, using computer-aided transcription software, a 40-page transcript from the internship experience
    1. Develop title page, index, certificate files, and parentheticals as outlined in NCRA CASE guidelines
    2. Apply developed research, editing, proofreading, file production, and delivery skills to produce and provide a professional transcript product
  2. Produce files as requested
    1. Create ASCII disk/PDF files of the internship 40-page transcript
    2. Document the realtime/freelance activities participated in while training under the guidance of the realtime/freelance supervising reporter
  3. Maintain accurate print and digital records of daily writing hours achieved while training under the guidance of the realtime/freelance supervising reporter or their designee on a verification form to be signed by the reporter(s) of those jobs
  4. Maintain accurate print and digital records of writing hours achieved while training under the guidance of the official supervising reporter or their designee on a verification form to be signed by the reporter of those proceedings
  5. Create digital verification forms which detail total actual writing hours from the internship experiences. Together the two verification forms should include a minimum of 40-hours of actual writing time. Verification forms must be signed by the supervising reporters
  6. Apply the standards from the NCRA Code of Professional Ethics
    1. Download a copy of the Code from the NCRA website
    2. Describe the NCRA Code of Professional Ethics
    3. Participate in group discussions about the Code
    4. Apply understanding to determine whether a given action violates the Code
  7. Demonstrate a familiarity with current events
    1. Read a variety of local, national, and international digital news publications daily
    2. Complete a weekly current events log for instructor assessment which details notable people, places, and events on a local, national, and international level
  8. Continue preparation for certification written knowledge testing.
    1. Take a preliminary full-length mock RPR Written Knowledge Test
    2. Develop a study plan to address areas of weakness
    3. Participate in follow-up mock RPR Written Knowledge Test to assess improvement and revise future study plans
  9. Analyze the profession, including the job search process, professional associations, and professional development
    1. Develop a professional resume which includes education, prior work experiences, reporting internship experience, and a professional references page
    2. Create a professional letter of application
    3. Explore available job opportunities
    4. Identify available state and national professional associations and certification opportunities and/or requirements
    5. Summarize continuing education requirements and professional development opportunities of the court reporter
    6. Outline income tax and financial planning considerations for the court reporter
  10. Illustrate the importance of professional image and dress
    1. Participate in class discussions, read assigned articles, and watch assigned videos covering the topic of professional image/dress
    2. Dress professionally while shadowing
    3. Display a professional attitude by actively participating in learning and meeting all deadlines
