CRC 230 - Realtime Court Reprtg Proc II

A course to focus on the role of the realtime official (judicial) reporter. Students study the many aspects of being an official reporter, including general courtroom procedures, realtime in the courtroom, and transcript preparation. Sustained multi-voice dictation will be given.
Prerequisite: CRC 190  
Corequisite: CRC 220  and CRC 223  
Competencies
  1. Assume the role of the official reporter in marking and handling exhibits
    1. Discuss procedure for marking exhibits
    2. Identify markings to be added to the exhibit sticker
    3. Mark exhibits during a simulated trial proceeding
    4. Insert appropriate parenthetical(s) in the transcript
    5. Describe procedure for retention and storage of physical exhibits
    6. Explain how EDMS is used for digital exhibit retention/storage
  2. Write speaker identifications in multi-speaker situations
    1. Assign speaker identifiers to be used in writing proceedings (to include verifying dictionary entries and setting up the speaker table in CAT software)
    2. Write assigned speaker identifiers during simulated proceedings
    3. Practice writing sustained multi-voice material through recordings, live-virtual proceedings, and/or shadowing a reporter
  3. Demonstrate responsibility for reporting trials and other judicial proceedings and archiving steno notes
    1. Ensure a verbatim transcript during simulated proceedings of various types by interrupting the speakers, when necessary, in order to maintain the integrity of the record
    2. Discuss methods for obtaining spellings of proper names
    3. Find requested portion of the record and accurately read back designated portion when requested
    4. File, index, and archive steno notes
  4. Discuss the reporting techniques involved in the following circumstances after participating in assigned group simulation(s): 
    1. Reporting with an interpreter
    2. Reporting sidebar discussions
    3. Handling discussions off the record
    4. Reporting and transcribing voir dire of the jury
    5. Reporting voir dire of witnesses
    6. Reporting polling of the jury
  5. Assume the role of the realtime reporter in the production of accurate transcripts from trials and other proceedings
    1. Using appropriate reference sources, research as necessary to prepare job dictionaries
    2. Plan speaker identification strokes and set up speaker table in CAT software
    3. Use realtime strokes to designate examination types (direct, cross, redirect, recross, etc.),  by lines, and colloquy as required by proceeding
    4. Use reporter parentheticals for marking and handling of exhibits, noting discussions off the record, and indicating nonverbal actions as required by the proceeding
    5. Include and edit applicable title page, index, certificate, and other pages as may be required by the proceeding
    6. Correctly format examination types (direct, cross, redirect, re-cross, etc.) and necessary parentheticals (exhibits, nonverbal actions, off-the-record discussions, etc.) in the body of the transcript and/or index as appropriate to the proceeding
    7. Edit and proofread the transcript for correct word usage, spelling, punctuation, and capitalization, utilizing the Department Style Manual and appropriate print and online references
    8. Deliver the edited transcript to a proofreader classmate for peer review
    9. Research to verify and accept or to disprove and deny proofreader’s suggested changes
    10. Finalize the transcript, run spell-check, and deliver (submit) the transcript to the instructor for grading by the required deadline
    11. Produce all transcripts with the goal of zero errors but with an overall average of not more than 0.75 errors per page
  6. Act as the official court reporter in a simulated trial proceeding with a resultant transcript of at least ten pages
    1. List the steps a practicing court reporter in the state of Iowa takes to compile jury charge instructions if requested to do so
    2. Research, as needed, to prepare appropriate job dictionaries
    3. Plan speaker identification strokes and set up speaker table in CAT software
    4. Use realtime strokes to designate examination types (direct, cross, redirect, recross, etc.), by lines, and colloquy
    5. Use appropriate realtime parenthetical strokes to designate the marking and handling of exhibits, note discussions off the record, and indicate nonverbal actions as needed
  7. Produce the transcript of at least ten pages from the simulated trial proceeding using computer-aided transcription
    1. Prepare appropriate title page, index, and certificate page
    2. Accurately format examination types (direct, cross, redirect, re-cross, etc.) and necessary parentheticals (exhibits, nonverbal actions, off-the-record discussions, etc.) in the body of the transcript and/or index as appropriate to the proceeding
    3. Edit and proofread the transcript for correct word usage, spelling, punctuation, and capitalization, utilizing the Department Style Manual and appropriate print and online references
    4. Deliver the edited transcript to a proofreader classmate for peer review
    5. Research to verify and accept or disprove and deny proofreader’s suggested changes

  8. Summarize the realtime reporter’s importance in the trial and appellate processes
    1. List common realtime reporter duties in the trial process
    2. Describe the appellate process
    3. Explain the realtime reporter’s role in the appellate process
    4. Consider the realtime reporter’s impact on the judicial process
    5. Discuss the potential impacts of the reporter shortage on the judicial process
  9. Continue preparation for certification written knowledge testing
    1. Review of legal terminology and the formatting of legal citations, completing exercises and/or quizzing over the topics
    2. Review a selection of vocabulary, homonyms, and frequently confused words, completing exercises and/or quizzing over the topics
    3. Review Iowa Code Rules applicable to court reporters, completing exercises and/or quizzing over the rules
    4. Identify common case documents (e.g., Summons/Original Notice, Petition/Complaint, Motion, Pleadings, Subpoena, etc.)
    5. Outline Iowa District Court Divisions and structure
  10. Practice the professionalism of the realtime reporter
    1. Actively engage in learning and class discussions
    2. Practice professional communication in person and when communicating electronically
    3. Meet all deadlines
