INT 212 - Residential I

This studio course will teach the design process and apply it to a basic residence. Students will be provided with a client and an existing building shell and will be expected to develop a fully furnished floor plan that meets their client’s needs. The design will be almost completely done by hand, with minimal technology requirements.  
Prerequisite OR Corequisite: INT 124  
Competencies
 

  1. Demonstrate an understanding of the design process 
    1. Explain steps necessary to execute design process 
    2. Illustrate the design process 
  2. Compose a completed program  
    1. Identify client needs 
    2. Analyze client’s design problem 
  3. Generate various diagrams and matrices as part of the preliminary phase of the design process to address design problems
    1. Create bubble diagrams 
    2. Analyze adjacency matrix 
    3. Construct study models 
    4. Morph basic diagrams into block diagrams 
  4. Design a complete residential floor plan and basic reflected ceiling plan 
    1. Translate ideation to fully developed floor plans using an architectural scale, drafting pens and tracing vellum
    2. Develop a reflected ceiling plan that corresponds to floor plan using an architectural scale, drafting pens and tracing vellum 
  5. Transfer design to Sketchup 
    1. Create a basic 3D view in Sketchup 
    2. Produce 2 completed renderings by hand, using color media 
    3. Scan floor plans and renderings, and modify as necessary using Adobe Photoshop  
  6. Draft elevations and sections by hand 
    1. Demonstrate the relationships between spaces using a building section 
    2. Establish placement of important fixtures with bathroom and kitchen elevations 
  7. Select appropriate furnishing, finishes and equipment placement in the kitchen, living room, bedrooms, bathrooms, and dining room
    1. Compile spec sheets for furnishing, finishes and equipment into a spec book 
    2. Revise floor plan to reflect customizations  
  8. Create a poster representing your designs
    1. Critique design
    2. Present design to review panel
