This course is designed to prepare students to enter the workplace with the skills required in a professional setting. This course will cover workplace behaviors such as communicating in a professional manner, conflict resolution, accountability, and business etiquette. This course will also cover career development skills.
Competencies
  1. Determine how to establish relationships for the purpose of networking
    1. Discuss the impact of self-image in the field of business
    2. List the various types of nonverbal, visual, and auditory data that influence the image you project
    3. Develop a list of professional contacts in a chosen field
    4. Prepare and practice how to connect with professional contacts
  2. Design a resume, cover letter, and acceptance letter
    1. Collaborate with human resource personnel to modify application materials
    2. Re-write application materials to align with various positions or organizations of interest
  3. Prepare for the job interview process
    1. Discuss the importance of expressing skills and goals to an organization
    2. Review research techniques to prepare for an interview at a defined company
    3. Determine preparation differences for various interview techniques such as phone, virtual, and face-to-face
    4. Develop unique interview responses and follow-up questions
    5. Assess effective methods to close an interview and discuss appropriate interview follow up
  4. Assess how LinkedIn and other social media can create an original “brand” for employment
    1. Create a LinkedIn account and explore its advantages
    2. Review your current social media presence
    3. Discuss DMACC’s Career Center and connections to potential employers
  5. Develop negotiating techniques and become a self-advocate for employment
    1. Determine your unique employability qualifications
    2. Assess industry standards and compensation expectations in your field
    3. Review how to appropriately negotiate wages and benefits before accepting a position
  6. Discover duties or affiliations that will enhance professional growth
    1. Compare professional organizations and student clubs for professional development opportunities
    2. Prepare and present newly developed resources to demonstrate career readiness
