DRA 231 - Advanced Voice for Actors Credits: 3 Lecture Hours: 3 Lab Hours: 0 Practicum Hours: 0 Work Experience: 0 Course Type: Voc/Tech An in-depth exploration of the professional actor’s speaking voice. Training and experimentation in truthful, healthy, and dynamic vocal production for actors preparing to enter the acting industry. This course includes construction of a vocal warm up, implementation of IPA, exploration of how IPA can affect dialects, and application of vocal work for actors to acting material for performance. Prerequisite OR Corequisite: DRA 148 Competencies
- Integrate an understanding of an actor’s vocal potential
- Examine habitual vocal tendencies
- Experiment with the natural range of dynamic vocal qualities in the context of material for actors
- Incorporate acting terminology into exercises that support the growth of dynamic vocal choices
- Break down how fundamental acting terms are applied to dynamic vocal production for actors
- Apply fundamentals of acting in subsequent exercises
- Construct a warm up that provides sustainable dynamic vocal work in the professional acting industry
- Distinguish each step of a vocal warm up for actors
- Establish the ability to repeatedly lead one’s self through a healthy vocal warm up for actors
- Integrate an ability to use the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) with dialogue for actors
- Break down the symbols used to represent phonetic sounds in IPA
- Apply the symbols effectively to dialogue
- Perform dialogue with career ready use of the actor’s voice
- Analyze material for actors using advanced vocal technique
- Experiment with professional dialogue using advanced vocal technique
