A photograph has the ability to convey emotion, mood, narrative, ideas, and messages, all of which are important elements of storytelling. Students will learn how to create engaging and compelling stories with a set of photographs. This Visual storytelling class will teach students how to express a sense of place in the photographs while painting a visual story for viewers of their photographic images.

  1. Demonstrate proficiency in photographic composition
    1. Show composition as the assembly of elements into a whole
    2. Identify visual elements as distinct groupings of shapes, colors, and tones
  2. Evaluate an interesting image
    1. Consider the process of creating a scene

  3. Differentiate how photographers use various means to create artistic expressions
    1. Discuss creative expression in photography
    2. Analyze an image that exists in your “mind’s eye”
  4. Evaluate places that offer good photographic opportunities

    2. Identify unique, unusual, and specific interest points
  5. Demonstrate the technical and visual aspects of photography by producing a storytelling photograph

  6. Develop an understanding of storytelling and the power of narrative within the context of the photographic language
    1. Analyze awareness for subjects photographed and ideas communicated
    2. Critically examine the digital landscape of photography as an emergent narrative form and genera for storytelling
