The course explains the difference in small engines compared to automotive engines. An emphasis is placed on assembly, diagnosis, and reassembly of engines. 
Competencies

  2. Use tool and equipment safely
    1. Review manufacturer’s repair procedures
    2. Comply with manufacturer’s warnings and government regulations
  3. Explain the fundamentals of basic engine design and operation
    1. Define the two & four-stroke cycle theory
    2. List benefits of two & four-stroke engines
    3. Discuss why each engine is used in various applications
  4. Disassemble engine
    1. Disassemble engine into major components, rotating assemblies, and cylinder heads
    2.  Inspect components notating damage, wear, and abuse
    3. Compare measurements of the components with the specifications listed for the engine
  5. Diagnosis engine
    1. Reassemble engine with gaskets, seals, and sealeres as necessary
    2. Test engine to determine it will rotate with appropriate force
  6. Summarize the sub-systems of small engines
    1. Discuss functions of stator and flywheel in small engines
    2. Review the difference in the cooling system of small engines
    3. Define vacuum bleeding of cooling systems
    4. List the purpose of decompression valves
    5. Explain the differences in the lubrication systems of small engines
    6. Discuss ignition systems such as CDI, HEI, and points
