RCP 605 - Neo/Peds Respiratory Care

This course will begin with embryonic development of the respiratory and cardiovascular systems and progress to teaching normal function, as well as teaching the common neonatal and pediatric diseases, including therapeutic techniques and monitoring of patients.
Competencies
  1. Analyze strategies for the treatment of a neonate.  
    1. Describe fetal gas exchange and circulation.
    2. Explain the evaluation of a neonate.
    3. Discuss neonatal stabilization and resuscitation.
    4. Complete a maternal and fetal assessment.
    5. Gather maternal and perinatal/neonatal history.
    6. Perform a clinical assessment and evaluate the neonatal scoring systems including APGAR, L/S ratio, Silverman and Dubowitz scoring systems.
    7. Identify risk factors involved in making a delivery, a high-risk delivery.
  2. Contrast diseases in the neonatal population.
    1. Explain respiratory diseases of the newborn.
    2. Explain congenital disorders of the respiratory system in the neonate.
    3. Explain neonatal disorders resulting from respiratory care.
    4. Discuss congenital heart defects.
  3. Anticipate the respiratory care of a pediatric patient.
    1. Explain the evaluation of a child.
    2. Explain acute respiratory disorders in children.
    3. Explain chronic respiratory disorders in children.
  4. Critique cardiopulmonary monitoring in infants and children.
    1. List indications for transcutaneous monitoring.
    2. Describe how to perform transcutaneous monitoring, pulse oximetry, and apnea monitoring in infants.
    3. Evaluate results for transcutaneous monitoring, pulse oximetry, and apnea monitoring in infants.
    4. Assemble and troubleshoot transcutaneous monitoring.
    5. Express how to perform quality control procedures with transcutaneous monitors. 
  5. Evaluate the respiratory care of a neonatal and pediatric patients.  
    1. Discuss airway management in infants and children.
    2. Discuss oxygen therapy, aerosol therapy, airway clearance and lung expansion in infants and children.
    3. Discuss surfactant replacement therapy.
    4. Discuss the administration of specialty gases such as inhaled NO.
    5. Describe the respiratory care practitioners’ role on the neonatal transport and high-risk delivery team.
  6. Evaluate mechanical ventilation in neonatal and pediatric patients.
    1. Explain when to initiate and adjust high frequency ventilation of neonatal patients.
    2. Perform competence in mechanical ventilators used in neonatal and pediatric patients.
