DRA 202 - Design Principles

A discovery of fundamental elements and principles of design as they affect theatre and other storytelling mediums. Students will engage in theory, process, and intended outcomes as they relate to an audience. The course will provide opportunities to examine and experience creativity and collaboration in design. Attendance at a theatrical production may be required.

  1. Examine effective examples of design.
    1. Discuss what makes the examined examples of design effective.
    2. Distinguish the role an audience plays when evaluating effectiveness of art.
    3. Determine the intentions behind design choices.
    4. Compare the work of professional designers who consistently produce effective designs.
  2. Analyze fundamental elements of design.
    1. Break down the design element of color.
    2. Examine the design element of line, including shape.
    3. Characterize the design element of texture.
    4. Examine the design element of balance.
    5. Develop one’s understanding that design elements are all a part of their own spectrums.
  3. Break down how distinct designers collaboratively create effective composition.
    1. Define composition as it applies to artistic mediums, especially storytelling.
    2. Characterize what a consistent world of the play is to an audience.
    3. Determine how artistic style, especially in storytelling, can be collaboratively unified.
  4. Distinguish parameters that consistently provide creative inspiration for dynamic design.
    1. Experiment with discovering inspiration for designs in one’s day-to-day life.
    2. Establish an ability to effectively analyze a script.
    3. Discuss the value of various renderings.
    4. Explore the creative benefits of metaphors.
    5. Establish the understanding that, in design for storytelling, if everything is important than nothing is important.
  5. Incorporate effective implementation of design elements into design projects.
    1. Give examples of industry standard design projects in storytelling fields.
    2. Create a design that allows a collaborator the opportunity to implement the design principle of emphasis.
    3. Generate a design that provides a collaborator the opportunity to implement the design principle of movement.
  6. Assess the effectiveness of designs discussed in class.
    1. Critique the potential of designs within the context of how they may be viewed by an audience as a part of composition.
    2. Show a consistent use of objective and considerate criticism of colleague’s designs.
    3. Develop an ability to constructively receive feedback.
