Training in the craft of dynamic, contemporary acting within the context of stories told with music, lyrics, and heightened dialogue and movement. The course includes exercises, analysis, and memorized musical theatre performances of scenes and songs. Attendance at a theatrical performance may be required.

  1. Examine how fundamental acting skills apply to musical theatre performance
    1. Characterize terminology used in effective, fundamental acting on stage
    2. Apply effective fundamental acting terminology to musical theatre plays
  2. Break down moments of heightened storytelling within musical theatre
    1. Determine how lyrics that a character sings can most effectively forward a story
    2. Illustrate how character driven rhythmic movement to music can effectively forward a story
  3. Interpret a character as written in the context of a musical theatre play
    1. Decide what analysis and scoring is strongest in support of clear and effective storytelling
    2. Assess how effective the analysis is and how well it was implemented
  4. Incorporate the ability to forward a story with dynamic acting performance during songs
    1. Demonstrate an ability to use fundamental acting techniques while singing
    2. Integrate fundamental acting technique while dancing
  5. Create performances of memorized scenes and/or solo pieces
    1. Perform each memorized musical theatre scene with truthful behavior in relation to the given circumstances of each performance
    2. Apply character analysis and scoring from the script
  6. Assess the effectiveness of work performed in class
    1. Evaluate the effectiveness of one’s own work as it relates to an effective portrayal of truthful behavior within imaginary circumstances specific to musical theatre
    2. Develop an ability to constructively receive feedback
