APP 255 - Intro to Garment Construction

Introduction to sewing techniques and application processes with a focus on clothing construction, fit, and design consideration.  Learn how to apply body measurements, layout and adjust patterns, select fabrics for different garment types, and use a sewing and overlock machine.

    1. Demonstrate the ability to set-up and thread the sewing equipment 
    2. Identify the parts of the machine  
    3. Utilize all the machine functions 
    4. Replace the sewing machine needle 
    5. Check thread tension 
    6. Identify problems by following trouble-shooting procedures 
    7. Utilize sewing and cutting tools according to industry methods 
  2. Demonstrate correct technique for taking body measurements to fit a garment 
    1. Determine the measurements needed based on the garment being constructed or altered. 
    2. Measure the human form using a sewing tape measure 
    3. Read a sewing tape measure accurately 
    4. Record measurements accurately 
  3. Alter a commercial pattern for an accurate fit 
    1. Explain pattern grading 
    2. Calculate measurement adjustments 
    3. Complete simple length and width pattern alterations using the pattern pieces 
    4. Modify a pattern to remove excess fullness and make an area smaller 
    5. Demonstrate a slashing and spreading technique to increase or decrease dimensions 
    6. Redraw darts and seamlines 
  4. Employ basic sewing techniques 
    1. Produce examples of a variety of different seams

    4. Demonstrate a variety of basic types of hand stitches

    8. Install various trims and accessories 
  5. Apply various pressing techniques 
    1. Use pressing tools 
    2. Press seams and other construction details appropriately 
    3. Describe the difference between pressing and ironing 
    4. Use appropriate iron temperature and technique for fabric selection 
  6. Select appropriate fabric and notions based on garment style and function 
    1. Examine the differences in fabric weights and how it impacts the function of a garment  
    2. Identify the fabric drape and the impact on the look of the garment 
    3. Describe how fabric stretch impacts fit 
    4. Identify the differences in threads

  7. Implement layout and cutting practices

    2. Use a variety of practices to ensure fabric is straight 
    3. Determine how the fabric must be folded for cutting

    5. Anchor the pattern to the fabric 
    6. Cut fabric out correctly     
  8. Construct a variety of garments 
    1. Identify the steps of putting together a garment. 
    2. Demonstrate the ability to construct sample prototypes in cotton muslin fabric 
    3. Create a garment top  
    4. Sew a garment bottom
