MMS 480 - Video Production I

Students will learn the proper use of cameras, lighting, lenses, sound and technology to create shots and digital video clips. Students will also learn the fundamentals of editing. A personal digital camera is required for this course; students will also be trained to operate professional-grade cameras.

    1. Discuss the history of video production and how it changed people’s perceptions of life
    2. Discuss editing theory
    3. Examine video sequencing
    4. Identify wide, medium, and close sequences
    5. Develop matched action sequencing for continuity
    6. Explain how to coordinate sound and picture for effective narration
  2. Demonstrate basic video camera operation
    1. Determine a white balance
    2. Determine exposure
    3. Show how to focus the video camera
    4. Discuss shutter use
    5. Explain focal length and effective zoom actions using telephoto, normal and wide-angle applications of lenses.
    6. Describe effective camera mounts and tripod
    7. Identify depth of field, and how to accomplish desired effects
  3. Examine lighting techniques.
    1. Discuss the historical impact of video lighting
    2. Identify hard and soft lighting characteristics
    3. Explain and demonstrate effective lighting control using barn doors, scrim, gel, and bounce cards
    4. Demonstrate 3 light setup design for 3 dimensional effects in a two-dimensional platform
    5. Explain color properties and the additive properties of light
  4. Create standard production shots
    1. Experiment with close-up, medium, and wide shots
    2. Discuss high angle shots and low angle shots
    3. Describe headroom, looking room, lead room
    4. Explain and identify elements of composition
    5. Discuss straight and diagonal lines
    6. Describe toward and away shooting
  5. Analyze the technology aspects associated with motion video
    1. Describe display and capture characteristics, including pixels, resolution, graphics, aspect, ratio, etc.
    2. Discuss storage devices and characteristics
    3. Examine dolly use and operation
  6. Create effective soundtracks
    1. Discuss the science of sound
    2. Demonstrate microphone operation
    3. Identify the characteristics of boom mics and fish pole mics
    4. Describe wireless mic operation
    5. Show the correct use of field recorders to properly record broadcast quality audio files.
  7. Create a capstone video project
    1. Describe and assemble all the elements required to create a short video as assigned
    2. Examine pre-production activities including treatments, writing, shot lists
    3. Integrate digital video, sound, analog video, and minor special effects to develop a short video that is designed to accomplish a predetermined goal
    4. Produce and edit a capstone video
