PHB 280 - Phlebotomy Credits: 2 Lecture Hours: 0 Lab Hours: 0 Practicum Hours: 3 Work Experience: 5 Course Type: Voc/Tech Students report to a local hospital to practice patient approach and collect blood specimens from hospital patients. The 120-hour clinical includes both supervised experience and independent clinical learning experiences. Students MUST also take PHB 113 . Competencies
- Collect blood specimens from patients
- Demonstrate proper patient identification
- Follow recommended isolation technique
- Exercise proper disposal of biologicals
- Demonstrate knowledge of various specimen tube types
- Communicate appropriately with patient
- Assess patient reactions
- Select the proper site for blood collection in patients with special considerations
- Interact with laboratory staff
- Report problems to supervisor
- Respond to constructive criticism
- Enter required patient and laboratory data in hospital computer system (if applicable)
