MFG 261 - Milling Operations Lab Credits: 2 Lecture Hours: 0 Lab Hours: 4 Practicum Hours: 0 Work Experience: 0 Course Type: Voc/Tech An introductory-level course for the vertical mill. During this course, students will become familiar with basic setups as well as the safe operation and care of a milling machine in a lab environment. Corequisite: MFG 260 or Instructor Approval. Competencies
- Operate a vertical mill
- Perform daily maintenance requirements
- Setup the following accessories vise, strap clamps, angle plate
- Set the spindle rotation and speed
- Demonstrate how the quill power feed is used
- Show the location of each machine slide lock
- Demonstrate use of the ram and turret
- Set table feed for a given cutting operation
- Evaluate spindle orientation and position
- Use edge finder
- Use center finder
- Setup test indicator for spindle orientation and position
- Demonstrate adjusting spindle orientation
- Evaluate tooling and tool holding
- Identify commonly used cutting tools; fly cutter, end mill, form cutters, offset boring head
- Utilize collet to hold end mill or other cutting tool
- Setup solid collet to hold end mill or other cutting tool
- Use a drill chuck
- Perform common milling operations
- Produce drilling and reaming operations
- Demonstrate end milling and side milling
- Show how a fly cutting operation is setup
- Use offset boring head
- Evaluate what shop safety means
- Identify common shop hazards
- Demonstrate safety as it applies to common shop equipment
- Maintain all tooling and equipment (student or school property) in accordance with each individual manufacturer
