MFG 251 - Engine Lathe Operations Lab Credits: 2 Lecture Hours: 0 Lab Hours: 4 Practicum Hours: 0 Work Experience: 0 Course Type: Voc/Tech An introductory-level course for the metal cutting lathe. During this course, students will become familiar with the basic setups as well as safe operation and care of a lathe in a lab environment. Corequisite: MFG 250 Competencies
- Explain what shop safety means
- Identify common shop hazards
- Demonstrate safety as it applies to common shop equipment
- Demonstrate the proper care and use of the Pedestal Grinder for tool grinding purposes
- Describe how the Pedestal Grinder is used
- Explain the term “Ring Test” on a grinding wheel
- Show how to “Off Hand” grind cutting tools for the lathe
- Discuss the safety steps in using the Pedestal Grinder
- Create the layout of work pieces.
- Make use of the height gage to define part profile.
- Utilize combination square.
- Demonstrate the correct application of layout ink.
- Operate a lathe
- Perform daily maintenance requirements
- Setup the following accessories: four-jaw chuck and quick-change tool holder
- Perform common operating procedures: facing, drilling, turning, chamfering, knurling, taper turning, form turning, single point threading, aligning centers, boring, and parting
