HCR 260 - HVAC Trade Skills I

This class covers basic soldering, brazing, flaring, pipe fitting and tube working skills needed in the heating, air conditioning and refrigeration field.  It also covers the safe performance of those skills and the proper PPE required for each task. This class will prepare the student to take the EPA, section 608, CFC, Clean Air Act exam.
 
Competencies
  1. Demonstrate proper safety procedures using power tools and hand tools at all times with appropriate PPE.
    1. Demonstrate the ability to use a hammer drill with concrete anchors.
    2. Demonstrate the ability to use a hole saw to cut a hole in wood.
    3. Demonstrate the ability to use a reciprocating saw to cut metal and wood
    4. Demonstrate the ability to cut and clean metal strut with a metal chop saw
  2. Select gas torches to join copper tubing, using proper safety procedures and using the proper PPE.
    1. Use a Mapp gas torch to join copper tubing.
    2. Use an air acetylene torch to join copper tubing.
    3. Use an oxy-acetylene torch to join copper tubing.
  3. Determine the sizes of copper tubing and the fittings that join them.
    1. Identify copper tubing and sizes ¼” to 1 3/8”.
    2. Identify the size of flare fittings, ¼” to 5/8”.
    3. Identify iron pipe and fitting sizes ½” to 1”.
  4. Construct a copper tubing project and join it with metal fillers using proper safety procedures and using the proper PPE.
    1. Construct a copper tubing project using Sta-brite.
    2. Construct a copper tubing project using stick braze (sil-phos).
    3. Construct a copper tubing project using 45% silver solder.
  5. Describe the principles of safety related to construction.
    1. Explain the role of OSHA.
    2. Explain electrical safety hazards.
    3. Explain ladder and scaffolding hazards.
  6. Examine the ESCO Institute CFC, Section 608 study guide to prepare for the EPA Clean Air Act test
    1. Take the practice tests online at www.ESCO
    2. Attend each study session.
    3. Take the test online with the instructor as the proctor.
