CAD 139 - Intro to CAD/CAM Credits: 3 Lecture Hours: 2 Lab Hours: 2 Practicum Hours: 0 Work Experience: 0 Course Type: Voc/Tech The objectives of this course will be to apply computer-aided design software and computer-aided manufacturing software for numerically controlled (CNC) machine tools. Competencies
- Operate a networked PC using a current operation system.
- Login to the college network.
- Determine how to launch the CAM software.
- Maintain files in a tree structure of folders
- Explain the tree structure that the CAM software uses and where different types of files are stored
- Identify the different file extensions that the CAM software uses.
- Explain the software licensing.
- Discuss different methods of licensing devices necessary to run the CAM software.
- Verify the available licenses on either the network or PC (depending on license type).
- Discuss the different capabilities of each license level available for each machine type.
- Maneuver in the CAM desktop.
- Determine the proper hotkey to do the following the graphics area:
- Launch the cursor menu
- Explain toolbars status such as docked, floating, visible and hidden.
- Manipulate pull-down and cascading menus.
- Explain the status bar functions.
- Explain the calculator functionality within the software.
- Create, change, edit, and delete a tool library.
- Modify the speed and feed database.
- Locate and utilize the MRU toolbar
- Determine visual cues for ambiguous geometry
- Determine visual cues for ambiguous geometry
- Manipulate the ribbon bar for input.
- Determine different geometry types and importing
- Explain the benefits of a solid model.
- Explain the benefits of basic 2-D and 3-D geometry (non-solid model).
- List common translators such as IGES, DXF, STEP, etc with the problems and benefits of each.
- Explain gold-level integration of different brands of CAD and/or CAD/CAM software.
- List the geometry and annotation types that have difficult importing because of translation.
- Create geometry in a CAM software.
- Explain how axes are oriented in Cartesian coordinate system.
- Explain the difference between absolute and relative input.
- Determine autocursor (object snap) positions.
- Create 2-D geometry such as lines, points, arc, splines.
- Define geometrical relationship such as collinear, tangent, perpendicular, co-radial, etc.
- Create elliptical shapes.
- Utilize the chamfer and fillet functions.
- Create polygon shapes.
- Create machineable text.
- Create geometry using construction geometry methods.
- Control the WCS coordinate system and assign work offsets.
- Utilize data-entry shortcuts.
- Edit geometry in a CAM software.
- Delete geometry individually and using massive selection methods.
- Change geometry to new locations, levels, colors, etc.
- Perform mirror, rotate, translate functions with the geometry.
- Change level (layers) associations of geometry.
- Edit line width, style and visibility of geometry.
- Select geometry for manipulation using window, chain, area functions
- Selection geometry for manipulation using the color, level, geometry mask.
- Utilize all the trim and extend functions
- Analyze geometry for size, position, and distance.
- Explain the Machine Definitions (MMD) used for CAM.
- Determine the physical machine layout for a MMD.
- Determine the control definitions role in the MMD concept.
- Explain how the toolpath copy of the MMD differs from the diskcopy.
- Explain how the post processor interacts with the MMD.
- Setup properties for mill toolpathing.
- Select a proper MMD.
- Setup stock material properties.
- Select tool libraries and tool settings.
- Interact with the operation manager
- Determine what settings control the output of CNC code with the operation manager.
- Determine how to create, delete, and reorder toolpath operations.
- Regenerate dirty toolpath operations.
- Select individual toolpath operations using various Windows-based functions such as control and the shift keys
- Determine how to lock a toolpath operation.
- Change toolpath display visibility
- Expand and collapse operations within the operations manager.

- Manipulate settings for verification such as machined color, size, and shape of the workpiece.
- Utilize the backplot feature to determine tool movements.
- List machining time calculation for each operation.
- Generate CNC code
- Identify common G&M codes used by CNC machines.
- Locate and save files to alternate network locations.
- Open and close CNC editor as required.
- Utilize CNC editor to download programs to a CNC machine.
