ELE 239 - Electric Utility II

This course is designed to be loaded with hands-on practical experience. Students will be trained in proper anchoring techniques and working with electrical utility components.  Students will be introduced to, and work with conductors, insulators, and a variety of connectors.  Safe practices will be emphasized throughout the course.
Prerequisite OR Corequisite: ELE 236

  3. Install guying & anchoring system
    1. Set various types of anchoring system
    2. Assemble guy wires
    3. Attach guy wire to anchor to industry specifications
  4. Interpret line conductors
    1.  Identify materials used to conduct electricity
    2. Describe types of conductors
  5. Differentiate current capacities of conductors
    1. Name common conductors used in industry
    2. Discuss the hazards of line conductors
  6. Explain electrical connectors used in utility industry
    1. Select connectors by type and application
    2. Identify electrical connectors for use under full tension and non-tension
  7. Illustrate mechanical and compression connectors 
    1. Use compression tools to properly connect conductors 
    2. Use mechanical tools to properly connect conductors
    3. State common problems with electrical connections
  8. Distinguish insulators used in the utility industry
    1. Identify insulators used in secondary, primary, and transmission voltages
    2. Classify insulators by their application
    3. Discuss the hazards of insulators
    4. Install various types of insulators on poles and crossarms
