SOC 200 - Minority Group Relations

This course is the study of the relations between racial, ethnic and gender categories. Focus on stereotypes, prejudices, discrimination and exploitation. Major emphasis on group relations in the United States. SOC 110  is recommended
Competencies
 

  1. Examine majority-minority relations
    1. State characteristics of a majority versus minority group
    2. Discuss the criteria for determining a minority group
    3. Describe all of (but not limited to) the following concepts: race, ethnicity, religion, social class, sex, gender, sexual orientation, disability, and age
  2. Analyze the consequences of majority-minority relationships
    1. Summarize the social and psychological consequences of subordinate group status
    2. Describe what is meant by assimilation, pluralism, integration, subordination, genocide, and miscegenation
    3. Assess the inherent value of diversity for all of society
  3. Differentiate between prejudice and discrimination
    1. Demonstrate an understanding of prejudice, discrimination, institutional discrimination, stereotypes, and racism
    2. Explain affirmative action as well as other possible policies to increase diversity
    3. Discuss the exploitation theory of prejudice as well as the scapegoating theory of prejudice
    4. Describe the equal status contact theory of reducing prejudice
    5. Explain authoritarian personality and its associated characteristics
  4. Analyze Immigration and the United States
    1. Describe the sequence of immigration by the major ethnic groups to the United States
    2. Discuss changes in U.S. legislation af­fecting immigra­tion into the United States, and the impact of legislation and policies on diversity
    3. Explain the anti-Catholic movement, the anti-Chinese movement, the anti-Latinx movement, and the anti-Muslim movement, in the 19th, 20th, and 21st centu­ries
  5. Examine the most significant minority groups in the United States
    1. Identify characteristics of all (but not limited to) the following minority groups: ethnic minority groups, religious minority groups, Native Americans, African Americans, Latinx Americans, Asian Americans, Jewish Americans, Women, the poor, persons with disabilities, LGBTQIA community, and the elderly
    2. Discuss the major historical events of all (but not limited to) the following minority groups: ethnic minority groups, religious minority groups, Native Americans, African Americans, Latinx Americans, Asian Americans, Jewish Americans, Women, the poor, persons with disabilities, LGBTQIA community, and the elderly
    3. Describe contemporary issues of all (but not limited to) the following minority groups: ethnic minority groups, religious minority groups, Native Americans, African Americans, Latinx Americans, Asian Americans, Jewish Americans, Women, the poor, persons with disabilities, LGBTQIA community, and the elderly
  6. Demonstrate communication skills and critical thinking skills
    1. Use effective communication skills through writing that reflects mastery of basic sociological concepts and perspectives
    2. Demonstrate critical thinking by distinguishing sociological perspectives from “common sense,” and personal opinion
