MAP 347 - Medical Office Procedures I Credits: 3 Lecture Hours: 2 Lab Hours: 2 Practicum Hours: 0 Work Experience: 0 Course Type: Voc/Tech This course is an introduction to clinical skills. Students will use critical thinking skills to incorporate cognitive knowledge in the performance of psychomotor and affective domains during practice of: patient communication, obtaining vital signs and measurements, vision and hearing screening exams, pulmonary function testing, patient preparation, assisting physician, patient histories, medical record documentation, medical and surgical asepsis, sterilization techniques and minor surgical procedures. Corequisite: MAP 225 Competencies
- Identify common procedures performed in the clinic setting
- Perform vision and hearing screening exams with documentation
- Perform pulmonary function testing with documentation
- Obtain patient vital signs and measurements with documentation
- Apply concepts of patient preparation for clinic procedures
- Assist physician with physical exams
- Assist physician with minor surgical procedures
- Obtain patient histories and chief complaints with documentation
- Report relevant information concisely and accurately
- Document patient information accurately in the medical record
- Utilize feedback techniques to obtain patient information including: reflection, restatement, clarification
- Identify concepts of medical asepsis
- Perform disinfecting procedures
- Perform sterilization of medical instruments
- Perform sterile tray set-up
- Facilitate referrals to community resources in the role of a patient navigator
- Develop a current list of community resources related to patients’ healthcare needs
- Demonstrate awareness of a patient’s concerns related to patients’ healthcare needs
- Identify implications for failure to comply with Center for Disease Control (CDC) guidelines
- Describe the infection cycle
- List examples of infectious agents
- Perform proper hand washing techniques
