A historical and theoretical background to current concepts of addiction. A variety of addictive behaviors are examined with special focus on psychoactive drug dependency.
Competencies
  1. Evaluate the biological, psychological, sociological theories of addiction.
    1. Develop an analytical framework for understanding any specific drug-use issue.
    2. Identify the differences between misuse, abuse and dependencies.
    3. Describe general trends in U.S. drug use.
    4. Describe risk factors and protective factors of drug use.
    5. Discuss motives that people may have for dangerous drug-using behavior.
  1. Explain the historical development of Substance Abuse in the United States
    1. Distinguish between the federal governments regulatory approach from 1900’s to present day.
    2. Relate events that contributed to problems and solutions of substance use.
    3. Identify key pieces of legislation regarding substance abuse.
    4. Identify how substance abuse and misuse impacts diverse populations.
  2. Interpret categories, classes and names of the most common chemicals of abuse and dependency.
    1. Give examples of stimulants, Depressants, inhalants, mental health medications, Opiods, marijuana, Hallucinogens, Performance -enhancing drugs.
    2. Describe the typical effects of drugs in each of the six categories of substances.
    3.  Distinguish between generic brand, chemical and street names for a drug.
    4. Compare and contrast the most important routes of drug administration.
  3. Explain the signs and symptoms of chemical addiction according to diagnostic criteria.
    1. State the differences between misuse, abuse and dependency.
    2. Explain stages of change.
    3. Explain DSM-V Criteria for substance abuse.
    4. Outline the 6 Dimensions of the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM).
  4. Examine types of intervention in Prevention and Treatment used in Substance Abuse.
    1. Outline evidenced based practices.
    2. Review pharmacological interventions.
    3. Review legal interventions: commitment.
    4. Examine significance of self-help support groups.
    5. Identify treatment resources (i.e. agencies in local communities).
  5. Determine Ethical behavior.
    1. Outline principles of ethical behavior as outlined by code of ethics ( Iowa Board of Certification, NASW, ACA, etc.).
    2. Discuss ethical dilemmas that are common within substance abuse treatment.
    3. Explore personal values and beliefs that may impact ethical practice.
