The study of drugs and their action on living tissue including their use as an aid in the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of disease or to control or improve any physiological or pathological condition.
Prerequisite: CHM 132 , DHY 114 , DHY 181 , DHY 182

  1. Analyze the mechanism of action, pharmacokinetics, pharmacologic effects, adverse reactions, contraindications and dental considerations of Nitrous Oxide in dentistry
    1. Define the proper and safe administration of Nitrous Oxide
    2. Demonstrate the proper and acceptable dosage for Nitrous Oxide
  2. Analyze the mechanism of action, pharmacokinetics, pharmacologic effects, adverse reactions, contraindications and dental considerations of local anesthetics
    1. Define the composition of Local and Topical Anesthetic
    2. Demonstrate the proper and acceptable dosage for local anesthetic
  3. Examine the general principals of Pharmacology
    1. List pharmacologic information, sources, regulatory agencies, drug legislation and prescription writing
    2. Define drug action and handling including mechanisms of action, pharmacokinetics and routes of drug administration
    3. Identify adverse reactions that can occur as well as how to recognize these adverse reactions
  4. Differentiate drugs used in dentistry, including their mechanism of action, pharmacokinetics, pharmacologic effects, adverse reactions, contraindications and dental considerations  
    1. List Autonomic drugs as well as the anatomy of the nervous system
    2. Define Nonopioid analgesics including Salicylates, NSAIDs, Acetaminophen, Gout medications as well as drugs used to treat Arthritis
    3. Identify Opioid analgesics and their antagonists
    4. Enumerate Antiinfective Agents
    5. List Antifungal and antiviral Agents
    6. Define General Anesthetics
    7. Identify Antianxiety Agents
  5. Differentiate drugs that may alter dental treatment, including their mechanism of action, pharmacokinetics, pharmacologic effects, adverse reactions, contraindications and dental considerations  
    1. List drugs used in the treatment of Cardiovascular Diseases
    2. Define drugs used in the treatment of Gastrointestinal Disorders
    3. Identify drugs used in the treatment of Seizure Disorders
    4. Enumerate drugs used in treatment of Central Nervous System Disorders
    5. List Adrenocorticosteroid drugs
    6. Define drugs used for the treatment of Respiratory Disorders and Allergic Rhinitis
    7. Identify drugs used for the treatment of Endocrine Disorders and  Diabetes Mellitus
